Great Scott! Telltale Games has some heavy news for all the cheapskates out there. Those who signed up for a free download of It’s About Time, the first episode of the upcoming Back to the Future: The Game, will have to wait until February to start pointing and clicking through time. That’s around two months after the game’s official release date of December 22nd, for those professionals who actually spent the money to pre-order the game.
Here’s the word straight from Telltale’s official email on the matter:
UPDATE: Your FREE episode will be available for download in February, just in time for the series' second episode.
Thank you for registering to receive your episode. Your free episode -- Episode 1: It's About Time -- will be available in February. We will notify you when it is ready for download.
Back to the Future full season purchasers can play the first episode beginning on Wednesday, December 22 (Pacific Time).
There's still time to take advantage of the pre-order offer for the full season before the game launches!
Get all five episodes for $24.95 (less than $5 per episode) and a free bonus game with purchase (the critically acclaimed Puzzle Agent). Telltale also donates $1 to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research with each order.
While some will certainly be a little disappointed with this news, it is a nice way for the developer to reward fans who are eager enough to just go ahead and pay for the game. It’s TellTale’s way of saying thanks for not just being excited about the property, but also for having faith in the developer to deliver a great experience throughout all five episodes.
It’s hard to say whether or not this delay was planned. If it was meant as an incentive, one would assume that the gap in release times would have been made known much earlier. This could very well be a reactionary sign of appreciation to buyers considering how widely the free offer was publicized across the web.
Are you bummed about having to wait for your decade-hopping freebie, or is this a good move on Telltale’s part?
Either way, the first episode of Back to the Future: The Game will hit 88mph on December 22nd for the Mac and PC. Everyone else will have to find a DeLorean traveling to February.
