From Software's Metal Wolf Chaos XD Announced at E3 2018

As teased, Devolver Digital has announced that it will be publishing an updated version of From Software's 2004 mech shooter Metal Wolf Chaos. Metal Wolf Chaos XD is an updated version of the cult classic Xbox game, which was released solely in Japan despite featuring only English voice acting. Fans can #MechAmericaGreatAgain later this year on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

In Metal Wolf Chaos XD, players take on the role of patriot Michael Wilson. Wilson, a relative of United States President Woodrow Wilson, helps to stifle an insurrection within the country and is subsequently elected President himself. He's then overthrown by his Vice President and past comrades in arms, barely escaping on Air Force One with his trusty powered armor "Metal Wolf." Michael Wilson will have to battle from west coast to east coast to save the United States of America from nuclear destruction.

Gameplay in Metal Wolf Chaos XD is exactly what one would expect from a third-person mech shooter made by From Software in 2004. The player will travel around various cityscapes using their impressive arsenal to destroy any enemy that steps in their way, including giant tanks and opposing power armors.

That Metal Wolf Chaos XD is finally being localized in 2018 is rather unbelievable. The title achieved cult status due to its very limited availability, absolutely crazy story, and voice acting that's perhaps best left in 2004. Yet Devolver Digital appears to be publishing a very accurate remaster of Metal Wolf Chaos, retaining the classic voice acting while improving the graphics for modern platforms.

With Metal Wolf Chaos being somewhat of a joke and the Devolver Digital E3 press conference being somewhat of a joke itself, some might believe that Metal Wolf Chaos XD's announcement is a joke too. But this announcement is very real. Singapore-based developer General Arcade appears to be handling the port, with From Software providing the game itself. And a profile page is already up on Steam, with profiles on Xbox and PlayStation likely soon to follow.

Devolver Digital does it again.

Metal Wolf Chaos XD is releasing later this year on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
