Alongside video games' current resurgence in the realm of movies, with titles like Mortal Kombat, Uncharted, Metal Gear Solid, and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in the works, the medium is also getting a myriad of TV adaptations. From Devil May Cry and Twisted Metal to Fallout and The Last of Us, there's a range of video game stories currently primed to make their debut on televisions across the world.
The weirdest of these crossovers might just have been announced, however, with Deadline revealing that NBCUniversal is working on a TV-version of Frogger. The arcade game will allegedly be brought to life via an obstacle-course-focused gameshow, with contestants allegedly having to complete athletic challenges inspired by the franchise.
The series will air on Peacock and has reportedly secured a 13-episode first season, which will debut in the near future. US residents can even apply to be a part of the series, with the showrunners currently looking for applicants. As for what they'll be doing, Deadline reports that Frogger's gameshow adaptation will have 12 courses that contestants must navigate, reporting that leaping over alligators and hungry hippos will be essential to winning the cash prize. It's an oddly fitting focus for a TV version of the popular arcade game and one that will likely offer an entertaining spectacle.
Konami and SEGA originally brought Frogger to arcades back in 1981, with the crux seeing players navigate a frog across dangerous environments using lilypads, moving logs, and more. It has since become one of gaming's longest-running franchises, spawning over 30 entries spanning from the Atari 2600 to the PlayStation 3. Its latest release, Frogger in Toy Town, landed on mobile devices in 2019. It's not the only Konami property that will be hitting the screen in the coming years, with a movie adaptation of Metal Gear Solid currently in the works under Kong: Skull Island director, Jordan Vogt-Roberts.
The movie has already cast its Solid Snake, with Star Wars and Ex Machina star Oscar Isaac slated to take on the legendary role. Meanwhile, according to Roberts, the script will look to capitalize on the crazy, fourth-wall-breaking plots of Hideo Kojima's iconic games. While Konami has gone silent on the games' front, it seems its franchises are very active in the world of film and TV. Another adaptation that's currently well into production is The Last of Us, which recently brought Pedro Pascal and Belle Ramsey aboard to take on the iconic roles of Joel and Ellie. The production already has a lot of fan expectation, with it set to debut on HBO with Neil Druckmann and Chernobyl's Craig Mazin as its showrunners.
