First hitting the scene in 2020, Friday Night Funkin' is a popular free-to-play open-source rhythm game that has taken the internet by storm. While the game is currently quite modestly sized, having just over twenty songs, the game's incredibly successful Kickstarter recently raised over two million dollars, so the future looks quite bright for the game.

Due to the game's open-source nature, not only is the game easy to mod but modding is directly supported by the game's creators, leading to massive amounts of high-quality fan-made mods coming to prominence. Many of these mods mess with the formula of the game so much that these mods form their own identity and feel quite different from the original game. So today we're going to shine a light on ten Friday Night Funkin' mods that make it feel like a completely different game!

10 Shaggy

Inspired by the various flavors of memes that circulate the internet that focus on the power of Shaggy from Scooby-Doo, the Shaggy mod is notably difficult, featuring several tracks that will test even the most skilled players.

However, rather than simply featuring difficult charts, this mod fundamentally alters the way the game is played, forcing the player to use additional keys rather than the four that are normally used, making it truly play like a different game.

9 Friday Night Funkin' with Parappa

It's no secret that one of the biggest inspirations for Friday Night Funkin was the PS1 rhythm game classic, Parappa the Rapper. Well with the Friday Night Funkin' with Parappa utilizes the Friday Night Funkin' engine to recreate several songs from Parappa.

Going as far as to directly recreate Parappa visuals within the Friday Night Funkin' art style alongside the original songs, any fans of Parappa the Rapper are sure to adore this mod.

8 Dark Sheep

Dark Sheep is an incredibly unique mod that takes the basic premise of Friday Night Funkin and spins it in an entirely different direction. While the majority of mods tend to focus on a player's rap battle opponent, Dark Sheep strips away the background and characters, removing everything on the screen save for the arrows.

However, rather than keeping things static, it distinctly moves the arrows around the screen, repositioning in various ways to the beat of the music, making it feel like a new rhythm game entirely.

7 Sunday, Tabi, and VS. Big Brother

While Friday Night Funkin's is traditionally an arcade-style game that focuses on the player jumping in and immediately playing, the Sunday, Tabi, and Big Brother mods fundamentally mess with this formula.

While these mods keep using some of the same characters as the core game such as the Boyfriend and the Girlfriend, it featuring voice acted and story-driven conversations rather than the raw gameplay fans of the game may be accustomed to.

With intentionally sloppy visuals, charts, and music, the mod is an impressive parody that somehow manages to feel as though little to no effort was made to create it, while simultaneously having a comparatively huge scope to most mods.

5 Golf Minigame

As the name would imply the Friday Night FunkinGolf Minigame mod utilizes the engine of the original game to create a golfing minigame.

While small in scope, this mod does away with traditional Friday Night Funkin' gameplay, removing arrows entirely to create a golfing game that utilizes rhythm and audio cues to form a golfing minigame.

4 Friday Night Funkin' With Guns

Another simple yet hilarious mod, as the name with imply, Friday Night Funkin' With Guns is Friday Night Funkin' but with guns.

Replacing the characters' microphones with guns and their voices with gun sound effects, this parody replaces the original rap battle of Week 1 with a rhythm-based shoot-out.

For those unfamiliar, SiIvagunner is a Youtube channel based around posting edits or "rips" of various songs from video games, and remixing them to sound like other songs, whether they be songs from other games or pop songs, all of which is done to hilarious effect.

While the channel has produced several edits of Friday Night Funkin' songs, as these edits are made, they are added to an ever-growing mod that makes these edits actually playable. Rather than being a linear experience, playing the SiIvagunner mod is much like viewing the channel, with each song being full of surprises and the player never knowing what's coming next.

2 X Event

X Event is a mod that is heavily inspired by Undertale, featuring characters and sound effects directly from the game, while featuring new and original music.

The game distinctly features an RPG-styled overworld like that found within Undertale that really helps to sell the bridge between Friday Night Funkin' and the indie game. While the mod is quite difficult, this difficulty feels rather at home in a mod based around a game known for the difficulty of some of its bosses.

1 Friday Night Funkin, But It's a Workout

Friday Night Funkin, But it's a Workout is a mod that uses visuals and music taken straight out of Lisa: The Painful.

Specifically featuring the track, Work Harder, this mod turns Friday Night Funkin' from a game of rap battles into a workout-based rhythm game filled with references to Lisa. While short and simple, this hilarious mod truly feels like it could've been a minigame in Lisa and is perfect for fans of the game.
