Sony has finally announced the free PlayStation Plus games for December 2021, confirming previous leaks that the lineup includes Godfall, LEGO DC Super-Villains, and Mortal Shell. Unfortunately for PlayStation Plus subscribers, it seems that the version of Godfall set to be made available through Sony's subscription service isn't actually going to be the full game, and so anyone interested in the full experience will have to pay extra.

The version of Godfall coming as a free PS Plus game is the Challenger Edition, which is all about getting players directly to the endgame content and skipping over the story campaign. This version of Godfall lets players instantly max out their character and jump into the Lightbringer, Dreamstones, and Ascended Tower of Trials modes. While some may appreciate the chance to skip to the more challenging content, others may be disappointed that they aren't getting the full Godfall experience through PS Plus.

Anyone that wants to experience the base game storyline or the Fire & Darkness expansion will have to pay extra to upgrade the Godfall: Challenger Edition to the Deluxe Edition. Needless to say, this is not a popular decision, and has already resulted in some backlash from fans who feel shortchanged by the free PS Plus games for December 2021.

Generally speaking, nearly every other free PS Plus game ever has offered players the full game experience, and so it's understandable that fans are disappointed with how Godfall is coming to the service. One has to imagine that part of the reason to bring Godfall to PS Plus in the first place is to give its player base a boost, but this negative reaction could wind up costing Godfall the influx of new players it may have gained otherwise.

Letting players skip all the way to Godfall's endgame content may also have some unintended consequences. Just because someone is fully-leveled doesn't mean that they necessarily know how to play the game properly, and that's something they would have learned from leveling up naturally and going through the story content. It's a head-scratching decision overall, and it will be interesting to see how PS Plus subscribers react when Godfall: Challenger Edition is added to the lineup on Dedcember 7.

In the meantime, PS Plus subscribers still have time to claim the free PS Plus games for November 2021. They include online multiplayer game Knockout City, action-RPG Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning, and social deduction game First Class Trouble.
