Sony typically waits to reveal the next free PlayStation Plus games on the last Wednesday of every month. However, the company has been known to shake things up in the past, like when it announced Oddworld: Soulstorm as a free PS Plus game a month ahead of time. And now Sony has broken its pattern yet again, confirming a free PS Plus game for August 2021 weeks in advance.

At the latest PlayStation State of Play event, Sony confirmed Hunter's Arena: Legends as one of the free PS Plus games for August 2021. PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to claim Hunter's Arena: Legends starting Tuesday, August 3 until September 6.

The free PS Plus games lineup has consisted of one PS5 game and two PS4 games since the PlayStation 5 console launched last November. At the PlayStation State of Play, it was revealed that both the PS4 and PS5 versions of Hunter's Arena: Legends will be free to claim. This has happened in the past, with Worms Rumble, and if that game is any indication, it's likely that Hunter's Arena Legends counts as the free PS5 PS Plus game for August 2021. So it's likely that PS Plus subscribers have two PS4 games to look forward to in August as well.

As for what Hunter's Arena: Legends is, it's a melee-focused battle royale game that offers solo and trios options. Hunter's Arena: Legends players have to fight off not only other players like other battle royale games, but computer-controlled demons as well. This makes it a PvPvE experience that should offer a unique twist on the standard battle royale formula.

Those on PlayStation may have already had the chance to try out Hunter's Arena: Legends for themselves. A Hunter's Arena: Legends beta has taken place exclusively on PlayStation platforms, so it definitely seems that the game is closely tied to the PlayStation brand. Now that it's coming to PlayStation Plus, though, many more PlayStation gamers across PS4 and PS5 will get to see exactly what Hunter's Arena: Legends is all about and what it's offering fans of the battle royale genre.

In the meantime, it's interesting to note that the free PS Plus games on PS5 have mostly stuck to a certain theme. Almost all of them have been brand new game releases, with one of the only exceptions being when Maneater was a free PS Plus game. It will be interesting to see how long Sony sticks with this pattern, especially with the PS5's 1 year anniversary coming up in a few months.
