Sony has announced the free games line-up for Playstation Plus in October 2019 during this afternoon's State of Play. Gamers with the subscription services will be able to download and play MLB The Show 19 and The Last of Us Remastered completely free next month.

The PlayStation Plus service provides games for subscribers to be able to play for free, provided they remain PlayStation Plus members. The September 2019 PS4 free game offerings were Batman: Arkham Knight and Darksiders 3, the latter of which is a relatively recent release.

These two titles are head-turning for October. The Last of Us Remastered is definitely a welcome addition, and its inclusion allows players to catch up on Ellie's and Joel's story before The Last of Us 2's release date. While the sequel to The Last of Us appears to have a higher focus on the gameplay, the story is also important, and Part II appears to be a direct sequel to the first game. If someone is interested in The Last of Us, now's the time to play it for free.

The other PlayStation Plus game for October is MLB The Show 19. While a sports title may not turn as many heads as Naughty Dog's game, The Show series focuses more on just having players run around on fields and courts and offers additional modes and incentives to keep playing. Moments let players relive historical moments in MLB history, while the "Road to the Show" mode has players creating a new rookie baseball player and helping them rise to the top. Since MLB The Show 19 will be free in October and a new entry in The Show will probably not be out for another six months or so, now's the best time to jump in and find out what the hype is about.

With the PS4 winding down and the PS5 getting more press and information, it may not be surprising for Sony to start offering higher quality titles for PlayStation Plus. Not only is there a larger library to choose from, but Sony will want to retain consumers that will make the jump to the PS5. There also seems to be a similar mentality behind Sony dropping the PS4 7.00 patch, which helps ramp up the UI for the next generational console's release.

The PS5 model has also been leaked, leading to additional buzz around the company, especially with the holidays quickly approaching.Sony needs a reason for players to keep the subscription active when people may be trying to find where to cut down on their budget, so having titles like these help to incentivize subscription renewals in the coming months.

PlayStation Plus typically costs $60 a year and can be purchased at most major retailers, and from the PlayStation Store.
