One of the best perks of a PlayStation Plus subscription is that members receive two new games for free every month, enabling them to try out a vast number of games they wouldn’t normally be compelled to put down money for. These games are always announced on the last Wednesday of every month, and as such subscribers await these days with much anticipation - which is why it’s throwing people off that the last Wednesday of December came and went without any PS Plus-related announcement.

No reason has been given by Sony as to why, but it should be fairly obvious. The last Wednesday this month happened to be Christmas, so it’s likely that Sony held off in order to save the announcement of PS Plus’s next free games for a time when everyone wasn’t distracted by holiday festivities.

Four days have passed since then, and Sony has neither revealed anything or hinted at when it will. However, fans probably won’t have long to wait until then, as January 2020 is just a few days away, and free PS Plus games always drop around the first week of the month. As such, PS Plus subscribers should actually be hearing from Sony anytime now, most likely at some point tomorrow or Tuesday. At the very latest, an announcement should be made by this coming Wednesday, January 1, with the free games added on Tuesday, January 7.

Announcement date speculation aside, there’s also the question of the games themselves. This is the biggest question on people’s minds right now, and the answer could turn out to be anything. While PS Plus has traditionally offered up older and more obscure titles, to the occasional chagrin of subscribers, plenty of popular games have been made available for free. No doubt different subscribers will be hoping to see different games selected next month, and that’s understandable. However, it remains to be seen exactly what the free PS Plus games for January 2020 will be.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Sony handles PS Plus from next month onward. With the PlayStation 5 coming next year, the next 12 months will be key in building up hype for the new console. One of the ways Sony can do this is by going all in on free titles for PS Plus, offering more exciting titles, or maybe even more titles per month. There are numerous ways Sony could improve PS Plus for the PS5, and any one of them would go a long way to keep players excited ahead of the console’s launch, and beyond.
