FPS games are usually highly thrilling, and highly immersive. Having players entire the eyes of the character, whether it be of their creation, or a named protagonist, they are responsible for the actions that they use their controller to act upon. FPS games can be a lot of fun, and there is a boundless amount of them.

Sometimes, players can’t help but wonder about their favorite games, or ones that they have played and considered the prospect of a third-person mode, and how the game could benefit from such a variation of its initial DNA. There are some great FPS games and those that may strangely benefit from being third-person.

8 Aliens Vs. Predator

Dark Predator get a lot of killing done in 2010's AvP video game

The legendary franchises of Alien and Predator have clashed in film, comics, and video games. Aliens Vs. Predator is a 3-way multiplayer game, as well as a 3-way story game, that involves Aliens, Predators, and Marines. Each character in Aliens Vs. Predator is in first-person. Whether it’s the Predator and his violent claws, the Xenomorph and its gruesome tail, or the Marine and their giant machine gun.

The game would greatly benefit from a third-person mode because it can be somewhat disorientating to crawl up walls in first-person. As a Xenomorph, players can stick to walls, and get somewhat lost on where they are. Third-person would make controls easier, and deadlier.

7 Star Wars: Republic Commando

Boss and Delta Squad

One of the more interesting aspects of the Star Wars franchise is the clone troopers that assisted in the downfall of the Jedi Order, willingly or otherwise. In Star Wars: Republic Commando, players will take the role of RC-1138, also known as Boss. Boss is the leader of the Delta Squad, a group of highly elite clone commandos.

This FPS game features everything Star Wars fans love, from Kamino to Kashyyyk. The game benefits from being an FPS, as players will feel like the tactical elite commando that they have been cloned and bred for. However, as a third-person shooter, the game could shine with a new sense of immersion for the clone brothers.

6 Borderlands 2

Borderlands 2 is one of the most famed looter-shooters of all time. Players will take on the role of a Vault Hunter, and take on the terrors of Pandora in their search for fame and fortune, as well as sweet legendary loot. The gameplay is addictive, and the villain of Handsome Jack is regarded as one of the best out there.

What Borderlands 2 could potentially benefit from is a third-person mechanic. A lot of skills for the characters are unique and could be a lot of fun in the third person. Especially considering that players get to customize their Vault Hunter with colors and heads.

5 Dishonored

Dishonored

Part of the appeal in Dishonored isn’t only the dirty and infested streets of Dunwall, but the powers granted by the Outsider. Players are on a mission to avenge the murdered and beloved Empress and to overthrow the fascist government that has taken over her sted. Dishonored features a unique playthrough for every player, considering the abundance of powers, weapons, and routes.

Stealth could be a lot more fun if a third-person mechanic was introduced. Players need to remain hidden behind walls and peer over the corner to make sure no one is there. In the third-person, stealth would be easier due to the increased line of sight. Plus, players would get to see that cool and scary mask that Corvo wears.

4 Destiny 2

Mysteries of the solar system are explored in Destiny 2. As a Guardian, players can enjoy different planets, and fight off alien threats with their Ghost, or Fireteam. It’s a vastly fun game that relies on co-op and weekly play. Destiny 2 has a variety of activities to enjoy and features an immersive story thanks to its first-person narrative.

Destiny 2 could greatly bolster itself with a third-person choice. Players can enter third-person if they hold a sword, or use their super move, but not in general. It can be frustrating, as the game has a heavy emphasis on fashion due to the armor players use, and they can only see them at the Tower, as during gameplay they are restricted to first-person.

3 Dying Light 2: Stay Human

A man looks worringly at the player atop a tall building

In a world where the zombie virus has brought civilization to an end, Dying Light 2 sees humanity return to the Dark Ages. The game takes place in The City, a location is known for its human population. Sadly, The City is on the brink of collapse, with added pressure from hostile factions and the undead. Players will have a heavy emphasis on combat and parkour to survive.

Parkour and quick movements can be somewhat disorientating in the first person. Dying Light 2 players could greatly benefit from a third-person system, as it would make parkour feel a lot freer, with a greater sense of maneuverability. This comes from the fact that players will have a better view of their surroundings, and where to jump or sprint to next.

2 Doom: Eternal

It’s rather controversial to take a look at Doom: Eternal through the lens of a third-person shooter. Many regard Doom: Eternal as one of the best first-person shooters of all time, at its rapid and metal pace. The game relies heavily on movement, and an abundance of ripping, tearing, and shooting. Lots of fun can be had in Doom: Eternal, but perhaps a third-person mode would add even more fun than there already is.

It's impossible to say whether such a mode would be possible, considering the adrenaline rush that is Doom: Eternal. The game takes advantage of its FPS design through the use of animations of opening doors, shooting weapons, and ripping enemies’ heads in two.

1 Cyberpunk 2077

With the announcement of CD Projekt Red’s newest title, Cyberpunk 2077, third-person was supposed to be a heavily included feature. However, the closer the game got to its tight deadline of release, the developers had to announce they had cut the third-person mechanic for time. The game is still great without it, and recently, Cyberpunk 2077 has had a resurgence thanks to the Netflix anime, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

Combat in Cyberpunk 2077 is a lot of fun. The shooting mechanics and melee builds are joyous to play and highly addictive in combat scenarios. However, the inclusion of the third-person mechanic would make better use of the combat, as well as allow players to enjoy their cyberware and clothing as they can see it for themselves.
