PlayGround Games reveals Forza Horizon 3, highlights platform cross-play and four-player co-op mode during a live gameplay demo across the Austrailian Outback.
PlayGround Games revealed Forza Horizon 3 at Monday’s Microsoft E3 Press Conference with an announcement trailer. The developer then followed that up with a live gameplay demo that featured the upcoming game’s co-op mode.
Forza Horizon 3 will take players to a land down under, with players racing their way through the Australian Outback. PlayGround is calling the setting the “largest and most diverse” open world experience the franchise has seen yet. The game will also support cross-play between Windows 10 and Xbox One users, just like several other games that were announced at the conference, including Gears of War 4.
To give fans a better idea of what to expect, four PlayGround representatives took the stage to race together. The players drove a variety of different vehicles, ranging from a BMW M4 to an off-road racing buggy. Multiple different setups were used, with some playing Forza Horizon 3 on Xbox One, others playing on Windows 10 with a controller and one player who chose to use a custom steering wheel with his PC.
The demo started with each player racing in a different locale, working on their own mission or campaign. Then, the presentation moved to a split screen as PlayGround Games Director Ralph Fulton went down the checklist of some of the features available in the game, including one the franchise has never seen before.
“It is packed with new driving experiences, with new terrain, with new gameplay and challenges and with all new vehicle types joining the largest car roster ever seen,” Fulton said. “Forza Horizon 3 also offers four-player campaign co-op for the very first time.”
The demo showed one player inviting another to join his active campaign. The second player was automatically synchronized with the first player’s race, with things like weather and traffic all adjusting on the fly. “With a single button press, Andy can join Bill’s session instantly and seamlessly. Joining co-op is just that easy,” Fulton said. “Between Xbox Live, cross-play and instant co-op, this is the most social Forza ever.”
The game will take advantage of the unique location by introducing a variety of off-road vehicles that can handle tough terrain. But there will still be plenty of high-performance cars available for the choosing on a roster that has more than 350 total vehicles.
Game Rant gave Forza Horizon 2 a positive review and it looks like FH3 will give gamers more of what they loved the last time around. The title will be the second to reach the PC platform, with Forza Motorsport 6 Apex arriving in open beta last month.
Forza Horizon 3 will be out September 27 for Xbox One and PC.
