With Forza Motorsport 6 nearly ready to launch, gamers are excited for the return of what many fans see as the modern king of racing games. Already, the title looks set to push the limits of the Forza series, with promises that the game will be the "biggest" Forza yet. Meanwhile, developer Turn 10 Studios has recently revealed a new roster of new vehicles, alongside the title’s achievement list.

Of course, all that effort may well if vain if the Forza Motorsport 6 multiplayer does not live up to player expectations. Now more than ever, racing titles rely on their multiplayer gameplay, but it sounds as though Turn 10 has a trick up its sleeve to make sure Forza 6 has the best multiplayer in the series' history. According to Dan Greenawalt, creative director at Turn 10, the latest iteration of the franchise will allow players to find their “perfect” race.

Turn 10 has made a substantial change to the way in which Forza multiplayer works. For the first time in the series, the developer has given players leagues to race in, with a player’s Driver Division calculated based on both skill and aggression. This is an attempt to match players against other drivers not only on their ability behind the wheel, but also by their driving style.

“What makes the multiplayer group distinct is that they’re not necessarily looking to win,” said Greenawalt to IGN, going on to explain that rather than simply hunting for victory, multiplayer drivers instead want to race against “people that are like them, that are the same skill level and are as rough or as clean as they are.” The move was apparently influenced by the addition of 24-car multiplayer races, but Turn 10 soon realised the difficulties such large races would face. Faced with problems such as time zone and language, racing leagues were seen as a solution.

Driver Divisions will have a scheduling system, where lobbies are opened and closed during pre-arranged periods each day. Accumulating large numbers of racers at once, players will then be able to gain credits dependent on their final position when the league has closed. The most skilled drivers will be able to quickly move up the ranks, with Turn 10 apparently drawing influences from the chess Elo rating system.

One of the more interesting separations made by Turn 10 during the creation of this league system is based on driver temperament. Although those who want a pure racing experience without having to deal with extensive contact will no doubt be relieved, it remains to be seen whether the league system will be able to cater to racers who want to face variety in the strategies of their racing rivals. Thankfully, with Forza 6’s release just around the corner, those intrigued to see how the league system operates in action will not have long to wait.

Forza Motorsport 6 is set for release on September 15, exclusively for Xbox One.
