People do a lot of things in Fortnite that don't pertain to the battle royale theme of the game itself: they shoot hoops and build castles, though mostly they generate over $1,000,000,000 of income for Epic Games. This weekend a Redditor named Rowlus spent time working on a Fortnite project likely to give gamers pangs of nostalgia. He faithfully created World 1 -1 from Super Mario, editing together a video with all the proper music and sound effects to boot.

The fan did a pretty accurate job recreating a level that is firmly ingrained in the minds of many veteran gamers. As the sidescrolling Rowlus progresses through the first level of Super Mario, many nice touches of detail come to the surface. He goes down a wooden wall that acts as a pipe, revealing some hidden underground goodies just like in the original game. Perhaps the most spectacular moment was saved for last, when he completes the level and uses a grenade launcher to create the Fortnite version of the end level fireworks. Unfortunately, Rowlus had missed his chance with the firework launcher, but he certainly made do anyway.

Rowlus says that he only spent about 45 minutes recreating the world in Solo Playground, lamenting the fact that he couldn't get any defaults to act out as Piranha Plants and Goombas. In any event, it was still impressive enough that other fans started complaining about the fact that users can't share created worlds on Fortnite - something that would undoubtedly be well-received if it was ever implemented.

Nintendo fans have been wanting Fortnite on the Switch for some time, a feat which Epic Games was able to deliver this June. Those who tune in from the Nintendo Switch will be matched with other Switch players along with iOS, Mac, PC, and Xbox One users. Unfortunately,  PlayStation 4 users aren't able to cross-play with Xbox and Switch users, though Fortnite still remains one of the best examples of a great cross-play experience.

No words yet on if Rowlus plans to recreate any other Super Mario levels.

Fortnite is available now on iOS, Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. An Android version is expected to release later this year.
