Fortnite has gone through a lot of changes with the recent release of Chapter 3 Season 2. Some are expected, like the introduction of new skins, while some are out of left field, like the temporary removal of Fortnite's titular fort building.

Players are used to Fortnite's map changing, but this update has brought a never-before-seen change to the map screen itself. Most of the map is circled off with red or blue lines.

These areas are easy to understand when players know what they mean. Keeping an eye on them will be crucial to keeping up with Fortnite's current quests and gameplay mechanics.

The red and blue lines are tied into Fortnite's Resistance storyline, where the island has become a battleground between the Imagined Order, or IO, and The Foundation's Resistance faction. The areas circled in red are controlled by the IO, while the areas circled in blue are controlled by the Resistance.

The Resistance-controlled areas are, for the most part, safer to wander in. In there, players will find Resistance specific weapons and vehicles, such as the Armored Battle Bus and the Striker Burst Rifle.

The IO-controlled areas are patrolled by the IO's guards, and can be more dangerous to explore. In exchange, they tend to have better tools and equipment, such as the IO Titan Tanks and Fortnite's new Siege Cannons.

Aside from housing loot types, these areas are also tied to this season's quests. When Fortnite asks players to destroy Cloaked IO Build Jammers, they know they should look in IO-controlled areas.

Crossing From Red To Blue

Of course, with a single glance at the current map, players can tell that the majority of the area is mostly IO controlled, and getting to a resistance-controlled area could involve crossing the entire island.

Thankfully, this update also increased players' mobility by introducing new movement options with sprinting, mantling, and sliding. If that isn't enough, they can also use the new Siege Cannons to launch themselves across the map like a human cannonball.

Players who don't like the current setup shouldn't worry too much. Fortnite is a service game that routinely switches up its mechanics and set pieces, so any changes the community at large finds frustrating will probably be rolled back with the next season.

Fortnite is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
