The first major patch of Fortnite Chapter 2, Season 6 has arrived, fixing bugs, balancing weapons, and other usual things players have come to expect. However, there's a new animal of the prehistoric variety arriving on the island with the 16.10 update, Raptors.
Epic Games' popular free-to-play battle royale is entering its third week of Season 6. Dubbed "Primal," the new season has seen many changes to Fortnite's meta, including the addition of various fauna (now including raptors,) a primal weapon crafting system, geographic alterations, and other somewhat divisive changes.
The latest Fortnite update makes good on the longstanding rumors that players would eventually see Raptors in-game. Teased within the first patch notes for Season 6, Fortnite is delivering on its promised, "apex predator" spawning on the island. Hatched from the dinosaur eggs players have found scattered across the map in recent weeks, the Raptors are by far the most lethal of Season 6's animals. The agile beasts, made famous by 1993's Jurassic Park, act very similarly to how they're depicted in the aforementioned film. The Raptors roam in pairs, and will attack any player on-sight, dealing roughly 20-30 damage per strike. Thankfully, these "Primal" animals can be tamed in the same fashion as wolves, potentially giving players a huge advantage in late-stage matches.
Beyond the addition of Raptors, the other most notable change brought about by the new patch is the nerfing of the Primal Shotgun. At the center of Fortnite controversy for being deemed "too powerful" since the beginning of Season 6, the developers have significantly reduced the weapon's firing rate. This means the delay between shots is slightly longer, something Epic hopes will be enough to stop the Primal Shotgun from being the dominant elimination machine it has been thus far. The new update makes some much-needed adjustments to the new weapon crafting system, including the addition of Animal Bones and Mechanical Parts to floor loot. Additionally, the frustrating storm visibility bug plaguing console players for weeks has finally been fixed.
Fortnite has been all gas, no brakes with new content as of late. In addition to the crossover Llama-Rama event with Rocket League, today marks the beginning of the battle royale's Spring Breakout event. The seasonal event will see the return of the Egg Launcher alongside Easter-themed cosmetics, in-game rewards, and an all-new cup. Spring Breakout adds the new character Webster, a hellish reanimated Chuck E. Cheese animatronic players can get early access to by winning the Spring Breakout Cup. Aside from in-game content, Fortnite fans can download new seasonally-themed papercraft masks for the Stella, Rabbit Raider, and Webster cosmetics.
The Fortnite 16.10 patch seems to address the biggest gripes fans have had with the title since the launch of Season 6, particularly with that of the Primal Shotgun. However, the addition of Raptors to the island has made NPC threats all the more pertinent. Players looking to tame or hunt down some of the dinosaurs may want to look into the unlimited health glitch if they hope to survive the encounter.
