Epic Games released a new content update for Fornite yesterday across all systems, but Nintendo Switch owners might have noticed that a key feature was actually taken away from the game. Switch owners can no longer use the hardware’s ability to capture video while playing.

The absence of video capture on Fortnite was somewhat baffling to fans over on the game’s subreddit as it wasn’t actually listed in the patch notes. This led many players to believe that it was simply a glitch rather than a key feature being taken away. While other versions of the game have a replay feature and other ways to capture gameplay videos, video capture on the Nintendo Switch was the only way to share one's excellent plays or other exploits and glitches in the game with others on this version.

Considering Fortnite is one of the most talked about and streamed games this past year, taking away this feature was an odd choice on Epic Games’ part. Sean Hamilton, a Fortnite game coordinator, responded on Fortnite’s subreddit explaining that the feature was taken away due to performance concerns. Hamilton stated that Epic Games had noticed a lot of game crashes due to there not being enough memory on the system. Disabling the feature saves a lot of RAM and should “have a positive effect on overall performance across the board” according to Hamilton.

Since fans took notice of the lack of the video capture feature, the patch notes have been updated. Many Fortnite players on Switch are hoping that this feature comes back and are claiming that they have never seen any such crashes. Epic Games is currently considering whether or not to return this feature to Switch owners.

Even though taking away this feature might improve game performance capabilities, it seems that most fans of the game are more disappointed to see this feature taken away rather than potentially having to deal with the occasional hiccup while playing. While other hardware is less likely to deal with performance issues due to low RAM, it’s disappointing to see the Nintendo Switch get left in the dust on a key component that makes the Fortnite community so great.

Fortnite is currently available in early access for iOS, Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and with an Android beta currently taking place.
