Right now, Fortnite is gearing up for several events to wrap up its 2019 and celebrate the holidays in proper fashion. Fans won’t have to wait to start receiving gifts, however, because today has brought with it a pretty unexpected new feature that should be welcomed by those who enjoy playing Fortnite's battle royale best with friends.

Today sees the launch of the latest update for the battle royale mode, update v11.30, and though it’s hardly massive, it does come with a fair amount of fresh additions, the biggest of these being split-screen co-op. It’s now possible for two players to team up in Duos and Squads matches on the same console, which fans of couch co-op games should appreciate.

This feature is currently limited to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Fortnite, and Epic Games stated that it’s still in an early version, so bugs may be encountered. However, the company said it will “continue to improve” Fortnite’s split-screen and encouraged players to report any bugs they find through the game’s built-in feedback tool.

Besides split-screen support, v11.30 updates the Party Hub feature in Fortnite’s mobile version so players can now preview what’s in the Item Shop. Similarly, the daily gifting limit in the Item Shop has been nearly doubled from 3 to 5, just in time for those looking for the perfect Fortnite gifts for their friends. Rounding things off for this week are small quality-of-life improvements to the game’s UI as well as a number of fixes to various graphical bugs.

While that might not make for the most exciting update, the next few weeks are shaping up to be pretty exciting for Fortnite players. This Saturday will see a live in-game preview of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker happen at Risky Reels, and on December 20, the three-day Winter Royale tournament will take place for those looking for something more competitive. And if the dataminers today are to be believed, that’s far from the only major new content coming to Fortnite soon.

Fortnite is available now on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, Xbox One, and mobile devices.
