Fortnite: When Does Season 9 Start?

fortnite season 9 start date

On the heels of the explosive Fortnite volcano event that brought back the Drum Gun and destroyed Tilted Towers, season 8 is expected to come to a close. This means those who have challenges left to complete or secret banners and battle stars to collect have just a few days to get this all done, as season 9 is just around the corner.

Barring any complications, Fortnite players can expect season 9 to go live on May 9. This is not currently set in stone, so it is worth mentioning developer Epic Games has had to delay seasons before. The most recent delay, in fact, was season 8 after Christmas break set the studio back on the project. At the time of this writing, though, there is no indication that this is the case with season 9, but many may want to rein in their expectations just in case.

Another thing to keep in mind regarding the start date of season 9 is the Overtime challenges currently available in Fortnite. At the end of season 7, Overtime challenges were introduced as a way to bridge the gap between season 7 and 8 (with the season 8 Battle Pass being an award for completing a set number of challenges). This time around, there is no Battle Pass reward, and these challenges have gone live ahead of the end date instead of after. In other words, it doesn't seem like developer Epic Games needs any more time to work on season 9.

When season 9 does go live, players can expect a plethora of new content including a new season 9 Battle Pass, skins, Creative mode additions, map changes, and more. Speaking of map changes, the aforementioned Fortnite volcano event not only destroyed Tilted Towers but also did serious damage to Polar Peak and Retail Row. These areas are expected to receive the most attention when it comes to map changes, but that's not to say the whole map won't see a number of new Points of Interest pop up.

Fortnite season 9 is also expected to receive a new dominant theme similar to past seasons. It's uncertain what else will come on May 9, but barring any unexpected delays, Fortnite season 9 will officially arrive.

Fortnite is out now for Android, iOS, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
