Epic Games' hit battle royale Fortnite has largely popularized the modern battle pass formula, providing players with an optional way to buy in to a game without giving them any advantages over non-paying players. Since the start of Fortnite, players have looked forward to seeing what is included in the battle pass with each new season, and the Chapter 2 Season 7 battle pass has many alien-themed goodies in store for players.

The new battle pass appears largely how fans have come to know it, players can level up to unlock certain cosmetic rewards like skins, Back Blings, Sprays, Lobby Tracks, V-Bucks, and more. And in addition to some crossover surprises like the inclusion of Rick from Rick and Morty and Superman, the Chapter 2 Season 7 battle pass has now changed in a big way, changing the way players earn rewards.

The newest Fortnite season, Invasion, has reintroduced Battle Stars to the game, but with a new twist. In the Season 7 battle pass, players will earn Battle Stars each time they level up by completing challenges and earning XP. Players can then use the Battle Stars to choose which rewards they want to unlock at a given time, as opposed to a more linear style of progression that requires players to unlock set rewards level by level.

The amount of Battle Stars required to unlock certain rewards varies. At the moment, it looks like skins require the highest number of Battle Stars, ranging anywhere from 7 to 9 depending on the skin, while Emotes and Pickaxes cost 7 Battle Stars, Back Blings range from 4 to 7, Gliders Cost 6 Stars, Weapon Wraps and 100 V-Bucks cost 5, Contrails cost 4, and other, smaller rewards like Loading Screens and Sprays will cost players around 3 Battle Stars. It's worth noting that players at level 1 can't simply unlock rewards at the end of the battle pass, but will instead need to either claim a certain amount of rewards or reach a certain level to unlock rewards on that Page of the battle pass.

So, while Fortnite players are given much more freedom to choose which battle pass rewards they want to prioritize now, the battle pass Page-unlock requirements do keep things in check so that there is still a sense of progression. Previously, instead of being a reward for leveling up, Battle Stars were required for players to level up, being rewarded for completing challenges.

In addition to new crossovers and an all-new battle pass, Fortnite Season 7 has introduced high-tech weapons like the Kymera Ray Gun, Pulse Rifle, Recon Scanner, and Rail Gun, as well as new UFO vehicles that players can fly around the game's map, wreaking havoc. It will certainly be interesting to see what else is added to Fortnite's new alien-themed season in the future.

Fortnite is now available on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
