UPDATE: Epic Games has officially confirmed the Street Fighter content for Fortnite.

original story follows.

Early Friday morning, a wave of leaks regarding a Fortnite and Street Fighter collaboration hit the internet. The partnership between Epic Games and Capcom would lead to skins for both Ryu and Chun-Li, as well as various related Street Fighter cosmetics and emotes. Now more substantial evidence of the upcoming Street Fighter cosmetics has leaked. A short trailer showcasing Ryu and Chun-Li, including a fun bit of in-universe Fortnite storytelling, is being shared on Twitter.

The trailer features a Street Fighter 2 arcade cabinet within a larger arcade. As the trailer begins, a match between Ryu and Chun-Li starts up on this Street Fighter 2 arcade cabinet. It features the classic match announcer and soundtrack from the original arcade game, making it rich with nostalgia. As the match begins, Agent Jonesy appears as a pixel-art figure. He then activates a teleportation bubble, in which both Ryu and Chun-Li transform into their Fortnite-style versions of themselves.

What the trailer conveys is that, like with X-Men and so many other crossover partners before, Street Fighter characters are coming to Fortnite. It's not just a straightforward skin release. Epic's building the crossover into its lore so that the Street Fighter characters make sense in the battle royale's universe. Whether that means there will be an accompanying series of Fortnite challenges or other unlockables remains to be seen, however.

There is a verified product of the crossover, of course. Both a Ryu skin and a Chun-Li skin have been leaked for Fortnite already. These may be bundled with certain Street Fighter emotes, like Chun-Li's Lightning Kick and Ryu's Shoryuken uppercut. There are also files implying that the Street Fighter Suzaku Castle stage may be used as a Skirmish Portal soon. While nothing's been officially confirmed, there's too much evidence to deny at this point.

While only Ryu and Chun-Li have been leaked for Fortnite at this point, fans are already speculating about further character releases down the line. What's a Ryu addition without Ken or Akuma, after all? There's no such evidence of additional characters yet, but it shouldn't take too much to add a Ken variation for the Ryu skin at the very least.

The Street Fighter crossover news is getting an extra viral kick online today, too. Thursday saw the reveal of a trailer for the new Mortal Kombat movie. A Jezebel article released shortly thereafter asked why Chun-Li, a Street Fighter character, was not in Mortal Kombat. This understandably went viral, given how much gamers love to dunk on hilarious mistakes like this. It all works out to Epic and Capcom's benefit.

Fortnite is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
