Without a doubt, rifts in the popular battle royale game Fortnite have been a chaotic feature, as last season items were "teleported" from the real world and back, and now the largest rift is shrinking in size. Although this feature is intended to be somewhat chaotic, the latest bug to occur with the rifts was not likely part of the plan. This bug discovered by Epic also follows a recent bug with the game that has caused it to crash more often, though it is currently unknown if the two are related.

Following the discovery of this bug by Epic Games, the developer behind Fortnite has decided to temporarily disable rifts in all game modes, including the recently added Sniper Shootout and Soaring 50's limited-time events. This choice is understandable, especially if this bug is related to the game's increased crashing. As of now, though, there is no telling when the rifts will return.

As noted in the Tweet below, players can expect an update from Epic when the company has the bug fixed, but considering that the giant rift in the sky is closing, it's unknown if these rifts will last after this season. This bug would then be taking some of the limited time left for rifts away from players, but until Epic comments or this occurs in the game, none of this is for certain. Check out the announcement below:

Of course, for some, this rift removal may not impact their overall joy for Fortnite. While rifts are useful for traversing the map or fleeing from the storm, they are not a mechanic the game is dependent upon for its shelf life. On the other hand, however, many players may also miss them should they disappear altogether, as whatever is building up toward season 6 continues.

Nevertheless, season 5 won't end until the end of September, so hopefully, the rifts will be back sooner than later. In the meantime, this week's Fortnite battle pass challenges have gone live, so players can check out a guide for the season 5 week 6 challenges here.

Fortnite is available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and iOS devices. An Android beta is currently taking place.
