Fortnite players are now able to claim a free OG Throwback Pickaxe, representing a time when the battle royale was still in its infancy. Those fans that have been with it since then will surely recognize the pick, as though it isn't very decorative, it surely holds a lot of sentimental value to fans.

This free offering is in celebration of Fortnite's transition to next generation consoles. This month players will be able to start playing the game on their PS5 or Xbox Series X, so to commemorate that Epic Games is giving away this keepsake that represents the game's roots.

Claiming the OG Throwback Pickaxe is easy and quick, but players do have a limited amount of time to do so. The offer expires on January 15, 2021, so while there's still time, it would be in fans' best interest to get online and claim it now. The pickaxe can be found in both the Fortnite in-game store or the PlayStation store.

OG Throwback Pick

In order to claim the OG Throwback Pickaxe, players need to navigate to the in-game store or PlayStation store. Head to the add-ons section (in the PS Store) and find the OG Throwback Pickaxe in the options. It should be available as a free download to all players, so all that's required is to press the purchase and accept button. From here, the pickaxe should appear in the player's locker, ready for use. Naturally, this could take a little bit of time, so don't freak out if it doesn't show up right away.

This and all Fortnite progress will carry over to the next generation, meaning players don't have to worry about losing any of their hard earned items. What's more, the game will receive major graphical improvements and drastically reduced load times on PS5 and Xbox Series X, making for a smoother experience altogether. There are likely to be other features added as well, like the PS5's new feature that allows fans to set a favorite game mode and then jump straight into that mode from the main menu.

This OG Throwback Pickaxe is nothing special on its own, but it represents a piece of Fortnite history. The game has changed dramatically since its initial early access stages back in 2017, but it is nice to see that Epic Games hasn't completely forgotten where Fortnite began. Players should keep an eye out to see if there are any other free offerings before the upgrade to next generation consoles.

Fortnite is available now on Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One, and later on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
