While core gamers and PlayStation fans may only care about major announcements and exclusives like Final Fantasy 16 and God of War 2, sometimes other priorities need to be met, too. Priorities like ensuring the most-popular free-to-play games of the current generation will also be supported on PS5. Sony did that today, announcing that Fortnite is now reconfirmed to be available to download and play on PS5 starting on the console's launch day.

Alongside the announcement of Fortnite coming to PS5 at the console's launch, Epic Games also shared a new trailer for the battle royale game. The game remains running on Epic's own Unreal Engine 4, which isn't a change. As such, it's unclear if the trailer features any additional visual improvements compared to other PlayStation versions of the game. The trailer certainly looks sharp, but trailers can be deceptive in that regard.

Sony left another important area ambiguous, as well. In a short statement, Sony confirmed that Fortnite progression and purchases will be available on PlayStation 5, but doesn't clarify what platforms will be supported. It's unclear if this cross-platform progression and purchases will only work for players moving from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5 or if other platforms will be supported as well.

To be clear, it was already confirmed that Epic Games would be releasing Fortnite on both PS5 and Xbox Series X at each console's launch. This reveal was made when Epic Games revealed Unreal Engine 5 back in late May. At the time, Epic also said that this version of the game would be "optimized to take advantage of the new hardware" for each new console. This optimization has yet to be confirmed, however.

Further, it deserves to be repeated that this is not the Unreal Engine 5 version of Fortnite. Epic Games said in May that it plans to bring Fortnite to Unreal Engine 5 as early as mid-2021, though that was a tentative announcement. Fortnite players will have to do with the Unreal Engine 4 version of the game for a while longer. The potential for a massively improved version of Fortnite coming to next-gen consoles is still there, but it may take a while to develop yet.

As for the question as to why Fortnite is being reconfirmed for the PlayStation 5 during Sony's biggest console showcase yet, it just goes to show how important Fortnite is. Millions of people across the world play Fortnite and the ability to transition to a new console smoothly is very important to them. Especially so with PS5 games costing $70. It'll be nice to have a free-to-play alternative in case some new console gamers can't afford to buy many games to go with their console.

Fortnite is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and mobile devices, with plans for PS5 and Xbox Series X support as each console launches.
