With Season 7 of Fortnite on the horizon, it appears Epic is teasing something rather big. Several gamers have reported that they've received some rather mysterious postcards from the Fortnite developer.
Viral marketing in the video game world is nothing new, though these days, it's usually done either very publicly, or very specifically targeted to content creators with large audiences. The latest bout of viral marketing from Epic seems to be quite a bit more random than other campaigns of its kind. In fact, the campaign is so random that quite a few of the people who are taking part, are spending less time trying to deduce what the postcards mean and more time on why they got them at all.
The postcards are clearly teasing something that's coming to Fortnite in the near future. As seen in an image posted by Resetera user IDontBeatGames, the postcards contain three shapes in bright green on a black background and the only message included is "they're coming." There are also numbers on the sides and bottom of the cards and it's a safe bet they are some kind of code meant to be deciphered. The postcards have reportedly raised some alarm because they have no sender or return address nor any text on the back shedding any more light on what they could be for.
One of the most interesting details is that several gamers on ReserEra recently pointed out they've never played Fortnite, or have any kind of Epic Games account. That has led some people to wonder how in the world Epic got their home addresses. On the flip side, some gamers who have long been dedicated Fortnite players expressed annoyance on the forum that they didn't receive one of the postcards.
One theory on how Epic decided who received a card and who didn't, is that those people used the online game merchandise store iam8bit. However, another theory is that the addresses are simply part of an aggregated "video game fans" mailing list. Neither theory has been proven or confirmed, as Epic is mum on where they got the information for now.
However Epic managed to get the gamer's addresses, most who have compared notes agree on one thing; that the postcards are hinting at the arrival of aliens in the game. That theory is inline with recent rumors that Metroid protagonist Samus is going to be getting her very own skin rather soon. Some users have also reportedly done some data mining that indicates UFOs will soon be in Fortnite that will pick up players and transport them to other parts of the map. For now, these are all rumors, as Epic has yet to shed light on the meaning of the marketing campaign.
