Fortnite is one incredibly popular game, having racked up 125 million players since it made its debut last summer. Epic Games' multiplayer shooter has built a massive number of dedicated fans who love and enthuse about the game. These fans are so enthusiastic, it seems, that some of them are even willing to pay huge amounts of money for physical copies of the game.

At online retailers, Fortnite fans are able to purchase boxed copies of the game for hundreds of dollars. Brand new physical versions of Fortnite are selling on Amazon begin at $329, though one seller is offering a new version for $999, not including the $3.99 for shipping. Even used physical copies are selling for ludicrous prices, with Amazon listing a "like new" version with no DLC codes for $149.99 plus $3.99 for shipping.

The offers on eBay are priced similarly. Brand new sealed copies of Fortnite are selling for $350 on PS4, while the Xbox One version of the game is selling for $375. Thankfully, the pricier offers on eBay at least include free shipping to buyers in the United States.

The high prices of the Fortnite game discs have left some with their head scratching. Fortnite Battle Royale, the game's most popular mode, is free to play, and this free to play status has helped the game to make more than $200 million a month. Even Fortnite Save The World, the paid-for narrative game mode, costs just $40 to download as part of the game's founder's pack which also includes exclusive banner icons and loot pinata packs. Given that Save The World is rumored to be going free to play soon as well, it seems especially silly that people are buying physical copies at these prices.

However, some may not be surprised that fans are willing to pay these prices, given the popularity of the game and the other trends it has inspired. Fortnite fans have created custom sneakers, have performed celebrations based on the game's emotes, and have spent hours upon hours producing content such as skin concepts and map makeovers. The suggestion that fans would spend hundreds of dollars just to own a shrink-wrapped copy of a game that's available for free is just par for the course.

Some may even see these physical copies of Fortnite as a form of memorabilia for the game, like some sort of collectible. Plenty of other games count plushies, t-shirts, and statues of characters as merch, but for Fortnite fans, the equivalent may be the game itself.
