Fortnite returned from its temporary black hole-induced hiatus only two days ago, and when it did it brought with it a fresh slate of side-missions for players to tackle. Again, that was only two days ago, yet here we are, getting a whole new batch of challenges today.

Longtime players probably won’t be too confused by this, since it’s been Epic Games’ habit to add new weekly missions and other content to Fortnite every Thursday for quite a while now. It’s been one of the most consistent things about the game as it went through all of the changes during Season 10 that led up to its relaunch as Fortnite Chapter 2. As evidenced by the arrival of the “Open Water” mission challenges, Epic’s not planning on changing up this schedule just because the end of Chapter 1 threw everything into disarray for a while.

Open Water Mission Challenges

Like the New World challenges that debuted alongside Season 1 of Chapter 2, the Open Water mission set consists of both standard challenges and challenges designed to familiarize players with some of Fortnite Chapter 2’s new gameplay mechanics. The challenges in question are:

  • Land once at Craggy Cliffs, Salty Springs, and Dirty Docks
  • Hide inside Hideouts in 3 different matches
  • Search 7 chests at Craggy Cliffs or Misty Meadows
  • Eliminate 2 opponents with a sniper rifle
  • Stay crouched within 20 meters of an opponent for 10 seconds
  • Deal 500 damage to opponents using pistols
  • Search 7 ammo boxes in a single match
  • Eliminate an opponent from 50 meters or further away
  • Survive 10 phases of the storm
  • Deal 150 damage within 10 seconds of leaving a Hideout
  • Find the hidden “O” in the Open Water loading screen
Fortnite Chapter 2 Map

That first challenge may be a bit tough for those heading into Fortnite Chapter 2’s new map for the first time. When they drop in, newcomers’ mini-maps are blacked out, with points of interest only showing up there once players travel to them. If they don’t want to waste time looking for the locations themselves, they can find Craggy Cliffs around the middle of the northern edge of the map, Salty Springs just west of the island in the map’s center, and Dirty Docks around the middle of the eastern edge.

There may also be some confusion over the term “Hideout.” For the uninitiated, Hideout is the term for the new haystacks and dumpsters littering the map. Like the name suggests, players can hide in these, either to avoid opponents or to set up sneak attacks, which they’ll need to do to beat the tenth challenge.

Open Water Mission Rewards

As a result of Fortnite Chapter 2’s streamlining of the in-game economy, Battle Stars are no longer required to fully unlock a Battle Pass and the challenges within. This means that Battle Stars are no longer given out for completing certain numbers of challenges. From now on, all challenges will reward players with 14,000 XP. And once they complete eight of them, they’ll also receive the mission set’s special loading screen, which includes a clue as to where to find the latest of Chapter 2 Season 1’s hidden collectibles: the letters that spell “Fortnite.”

Fortnite is free-to-play on Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
