Over the last few years and months, PS4 platform holder Sony has come under fire repeatedly for refusing to allow cross-platform play with other consoles. When explaining its lack of support for cross-play in the past, Sony has suggested that it has blocked the feature in an effort to safeguard younger players. However, not everyone is convinced that this is the real reason.

In a new interview, popular Fortnite streamer Tyler "Ninja" Blevins said that the issue boils down to Sony's "greed." Although Ninja says that he "loves" Sony and the PlayStation brand, "when push comes to shove, it’s a business decision. There’s a reason they’re not allowing players on the PlayStation to play with Xbox. And I mean — it’s just greed.” Ninja also said that Sony could "change the game" and "make a huge statement" by reneging on its previous statements, enabling cross-play after blocking it for so long.

Many seem to agree with Ninja, even jokingly calling the streamer "Captain Obvious" for the comments. Indeed, Sony's supposed greed is a point that has been raised many many times over the last 18 months. It was suggested when it blocked the Minecraft cross-play update, when it forbid Fortnite accounts from working on Nintendo Switch, and when it blocked cross-play between Rocket League and other consoles.

Many also agree that it is a good thing that the streamer is again bringing the issue into the limelight. While all of the debates and arguments about it have been had at this point, some seem to hope that by publicly drawing support for cross-play, Sony will feel pressured to enable the feature. Bethesda's Todd Howard recently expressed a desire for Fallout 76 to have cross-play, but said that Sony isn't being helpful in the matter. Ninja and Todd Howard are two very influential people and they may just be able to get Sony to take action.

It's worth noting that Sony has recently made some positive comments about cross-play, even indicating that it may change its mind on the matter. Speaking in June, Sony boss Shawn Layden revealed that he was "confident" the company could come up with a cross-play solution.

It's true that Layden's comments may just be lip service, designed to placate disgruntled players even as Sony continues to prevent cross-platform play. But, it may also be a glimmer of hope for the PS4 players eager to play with their friends on Xbox One and Nintendo Switch (and vice versa) without having to buy another console.
