Epic Games has revealed that Fortnite is getting a mounted turret weapon as part of a future update. Based on the image that has been released of the mounted turret, it seems as though it's going to be an Epic-tier weapon, though it's possible weaker and more common versions of it will be available in Fortnite as well.

The mounted turret's description teases that it can be "placed" by players and that it will overheat instead of running out of ammo. Since it can be "placed" by players, it's likely that the mounted turret is a new kind of trap as opposed to an item that will take up a weapon slot. However, that's just speculation at this time, and at this point, it's hard to say exactly how the mounted turret will work in Fortnite.

Depending on its defenses and how easy it is to snipe anyone using them, the mounted turret could be a game-changer in Fortnite. It could encourage players to build more sound structures, especially near the end of matches, and defend those structures with the help of the turret. Alternatively, if the turret doesn't supply adequate defenses, players may end up placing it behind doors to try to catch any unsuspecting enemies off-guard.

More details on the mounted turret should come within the week. Usually when Epic Games teases that a new item is going to be added to Fortnite, that item makes its debut in the next update, which will presumably be this coming Tuesday the 13th or Thursday the 15th if Epic sticks to its pattern.

Meanwhile, the mounted turret is far from the only item recently added to Fortnite's battle royale mode. Epic also added a new trap called the Chiller that freezes players' feet, potentially causing them serious mobility issues when in firefights. It also added balloons, which don't function as traps, but can be useful for getting the drop on enemy players and cutting down travel time to the circle.
