For the past few weeks, players of Fortnite have been speculating that some sort of major, meteor-related event is set to hit the game's map soon. Through small changes and tweaks to the map and its sky as well as its many destroyable items, fans think that Fortnite developers Epic Games and People Can Fly have been hinting towards some serious, destructive happenings.
The newest piece of evidence regarding the Fortnite theory that a meteor is about to hit the game's map comes in the form of some datamined files. Patch v3.6.0 was recently released for the game and in addition to adding a sticky grenade item, it also included some hidden files that directly reference a meteor strike. The audio files are labeled with things such as "Meteor_Almost_Landed," "Meteor_BreakOpen," "Meteor_Distant_Explosion," "Meteor_Sonic_Boom," along with several, very blatant titles. These sounds have also been compiled into a video, embedded below.

The datamined audio files are just the latest reasons for Fortnite fans to think that the meteor is going to strike soon. Other hints included in this very same update include new decoration for buildings in Tilted Towers which suggest that the town is going to be demolished by the meteor any day now. Players have also spotted emergency broadcasts on some television screens in the game.
Just a week ago, Fortnite players also reported that they have been seeing comets and shooting stars blaze across the sky at more frequent rates than usual. While the appearance of shooting stars and comets was in itself unusual, the increasing frequency also raised some eyebrows.
The datamined audio files could potentially be a red herring, as Epic Games and People Can Fly have trolled players over the meteor theory before. But it seems highly unlikely. If this is all one giant goose chase, then the Fortnite development team has gone to extraordinary lengths to make that happen. Given that the development team is already busy adding new weapons and skins to the game, as well as brand new game modes and ongoing bug fixes, adding new audio and decorations just to give players something to talk about seems unnecessary.
Fortnite players have already been waiting several weeks for their meteor theories to pay off and to see whatever it is that the development team seems to have in store. This latest tease suggests that fans won't have long to wait, so finger crossed the developers spill the beans soon.
