Fortnite's map is constantly evolving. Unlike other battle royale games that simply add new maps or points of interest over time, Fortnite goes one step beyond and changes its map on a constant basis. Every new Season and every new update brings various changes to Fortnite's map, from completely different POIs, to remodeled buildings, to reshuffled locations. While these map changes tend to be minor additions or tweaks, Fortnite's latest Season, 'Paradise,' may just end up changing Fortnite's map for good.

Established at the start of Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 4, a mysterious new Chrome threat is beginning to spread across Artemis island. Having already consumed Sanctuary and those inside it, this Chrome seems to be gradually spreading across Fortnite's map, transforming some iconic POIs in the process. With another few months left in Season 4, it seems likely that Artemis island will be completely changed by the end of it, with the Chrome having consumed all in its way.

Fortnite's Chrome Threat Will Completely Change The Island

First teased in Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 3, this new Chrome threat may be the most dangerous Fortnite antagonist fans have ever seen. At the start of 'Paradise,' this Chrome consumes The Scientist, The Origin, and The Visitor before spreading quickly across Sanctuary. Once all of Sanctuary has been consumed, the Chrome then stopped spreading, revealing Fortnite's new enemy boss, The Herald, who is seemingly in control of the Chrome.

When players dropped into their first match of Season 4, they'll likely have noticed that Sanctuary has now been completely covered in Chrome and has been renamed The Herald's Sanctum. A large Chrome tornado can also be seen on the outskirts of the Sanctum. While this is where the Chrome is most prevalent, players could spot it across the island, slowly consuming some trees and buildings. To combat the spread, Fortnite's NPCs have started to attach balloons to their buildings in an attempt to avoid the spread below.

As of the latest Fortnite 22.10 update, the map has changed pretty significantly, with the Chrome spreading to even more points of interest. Coney Crossroads is the biggest victim, being completely consumed by the Chrome and being renamed Chrome Crossroads as a result. Butter Barn has also fallen, becoming Flutter Barn. The Chrome has also started to seep into Sleepy Sounds, edging into the north side of the town.

Along with the vaults and platforms already attached to balloons, No Sweat Insurance has also been hooked up, and has now floated across to Chrome Crossroads, abandoning its original home in Tilted Towers. The Flairship has also made a move, leaving the Rave Cave and setting up shop above the new POI Grim Gables. The Driftwood has also flown away and can now be found east of Rocky Reels.

It seems like a safe bet to assume that Fortnite's map is only going to continue to change in the coming weeks as the 'Paradise' Season continues. The Chrome will probably continue to spread across the island at a steady rate, eventually consuming all of the game's iconic POIs. As this happens, players can also expect to see more of Fortnite's buildings take to the skies via balloons, perhaps eventually shifting the focus from ground combat to air combat. By the end of the Season, it seems pretty likely that all of Artemis island will be consumed by The Herald's Chrome, which could potentially lead to an all-new look for the island come Fortnite's next Season, which is set to debut in early December.

Fortnite is free-to-play on Mobile, PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
