Fortnite is officially launching its winter holiday 2020 event. Titled "Operation Snowdown", the event gives Fortnite players the opportunity to earn rewards and play in new and returning modes.

Epic Games' popular battle royale title launched its fifth season only weeks ago, with the introduction of the Zero Point. Fortnite's new wintry event looks to be arriving just in time for the holiday season.

Detailed in a post on Epic Games' official website, Operation Snowdown will operate similarly to last year's Fortnite Winterfest event. From December 18 through January 5, players will be able to earn free cosmetics by completing new character Snowmando's quests. Some of these rewards include the Shield Surprise Back Bling and Frosty Globes Pickaxe, as well as gliders, weapon wraps, and more. Players who complete nine Operation Snowdown quests will unlock the Snowmando skin, and twelve unlocks the winter-inspired Frost Squad.

One big thing making its return with Operation Snowdown is Fortnite's planes. Not only are the planes already located on the map, but Epic is bringing back the popular Air Royale LTM as well. In addition, chiller grenades and presents are also back on the island, making player strategy even more dynamic. Gamers will also have the chance to experience an all-new mode called Shockwave. This sees players compete to knock each other into an extra-powerful, ever-shrinking storm. Lastly, Pickaxe Frenzy comes to Fortnite for the first time as an LTM. Players having a hard time deciding what mode to play can be randomly put in using the Snowdown Shuffle playlist.

The winter-themed content doesn't end there. Players will have the chance to snag both new and returning holiday skins, which include a candy cane, a sentient snowglobe, and more. However, these cosmetics are unfortunately not free, and must be separately purchased with V-Bucks. Something that is free (until January 5) though is the caroling Sing Along emote featured in the above trailer.

Fortnite has been on a collaborative hot streak, consistently creating buzz around the gaming community for its unexpected guest characters. Epic Games has managed to recruit protagonists from all corners of games and media, including God of War's Kratos, Daryl and Michonne from The Walking Dead, and soon Halo's Master Chief. With such a focus on bringing different universes to Fortnite, many have theorized another game will bring Fortnite to it. Some players believe Agent Jonesy may be the next fighter coming to Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

Fortnite is free-to-play for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
