Following on the heels of its John Wick themed mode, Fortnite has announced a new collaboration with the Michael Jordan brand. The collaboration features a new Limited Time Mode and some new skins, but oddly none of them are actually themed around Michael Jordan the basketball player.

The new Fortnite mode is called Downtown Drop and is designed by Creative artists NotNellaf and Tollmolia. Essentially, players race down a city street performing aerial tricks and collecting coins and Jordan sneakers (for boosts) to see who can make it to the bottom first.

Along with the new LTM, Fortnite has introduced two new skins called Get the Grind and Clutch, both of which blend a futuristic look with skateboard and basketball culture. There are also a set of skateboard back bling items available that feature different designs on them, like Fortnite’s fast food mascots and a Slurp logo.

But strangely, with all of this attention focused on a collaboration between Fortnite and the Jordan brand, there is no Michael Jordan skin. The logo for the collaboration even features the iconic Jumpman logo, which suggests a larger basketball tie-in but that is nowhere to be found. Perhaps as the week goes on and Epic Games adds new skins and cosmetics, players might see more basketball-themed looks but as of right now it’s an odd collaboration.

Of course, putting Michael Jordan in the game may have required a lot more of a financial investment from Epic Games and Fortnite, and it likely carried its own considerations. Back when Fortnite introduced NFL jerseys into the game, there were some controversies that arose over players’ ability to put representations of real NFL athletes in compromising situations. Still, the John Wick mode featured a Keanu Reeves representation and that went over without any issue, but perhaps there are greater discussions at play with including a major sports icon like Jordan.

So, perhaps the answer as to why Michael Jordan isn’t in Fortnite is as simple. Epic Games would rather not give players the opportunity to create content that is antithetical to the Jumpman brand and the character of Jordan himself. Still, it’s a little odd that this collaboration is so focused on futuristic skateboarding.

Fortnite is available now for Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
