Fortnite's latest update has made a number of changes to the battle royale game, with one of the biggest being the return of glider re-deploy as a limited-use item. The battle royale map itself is mostly unchanged as of the update, with the exception being Polar Peak, which now has a giant ice ball floating above it.

Some Fortnite players may be wondering what a massive ice ball is doing above Polar Peak, and it seems to be tied to an upcoming "ice storm" event. As teased by noted Fortnite leaker Lucas7oshi on Twitter, it seems the ice ball is going to gradually change in the coming weeks, with the Ice King eventually doing something that will trigger a new event.

Right now the running theory is that this event will be similar to the cube event from last season, which saw cube monsters invade the battle royale map. This time around, it seems the enemies will be ice-themed, though they should function similarly to the cube monsters in practice. Of course, it's possible that Epic has something else up its sleeve, but it does seem like some sort of PvE element is coming back to Fortnite's battle royale mode soon.

It's hard to say exactly when all of this will go down in Fortnite's battle royale mode. At the time of writing, Fortnite is on Week 6 of Season 7, meaning that there are still four more weeks to go before the season is over. It's possible that this ice storm event will take place during the last few weeks of Season 7, or it may not occur until the very end, and be used to segue into Season 8 of the game.

Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see how other story developments impact Fortnite's battle royale map in the near future. Polar Peak continues to melt, revealing more and more of the Ice King's castle, and we've also had teases that dragons are coming to the game in some form as well. In any case, the final weeks of Fortnite Season 7 should definitely be exciting for fans of the game.

Fortnite is out now in early access for Android, iOS, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
