Season 8 of Fortnite has made a number of big changes to the game and the battle royale map. This includes a volcano where Wailing Woods used to be, pirate camps popping up all over the place, and some new items, like the legendary-tier buried treasure map. The treasure map is brand new to Fortnite, and so some players may not quite know exactly how to use it in the game.

To use the treasure map in Fortnite, players first need to find one, which is easier said than done. Since treasure maps are legendary-tier items, their spawn rate isn't exactly high, so players may have trouble actually finding one. Just like any other item in the game, treasure maps can be found in chests or just lying around the game world, so if they play enough matches, Fortnite players are bound to find one eventually.

Once players have a buried treasure map in their possession, they can use it to make a gold light appear in the sky. This gold light leads to the "X" that marks the spot where some buried treasure is located. Upon arriving at this destination, Fortnite players can use their pickaxe to destroy the ground and reveal some high-tier loot for their troubles.

The treasure maps in Fortnite essentially give more players a chance to get legendary-tier loot in the game. Previously, the best loot would usually be restricted to supply drops, which are hard to find until the end of matches where they start falling out of the sky more frequently. This way more players have a fighting chance of getting a Victory Royale, since they will have more opportunities to get some of the game's best weapons and loot.

Since the treasure maps fit with the Season 8 pirate theme, Fortnite players should be sure to check them out while they're still available. They will likely be removed from the game when Season 9 starts, though then again, a significant chunk of the battle royale map is still covered in the snow from Season 7, so maybe the treasure maps will stay, too.

Fortnite is out now in early access for Android, iOS, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
