Season 5 of Fortnite is live, drastically changing the map and adding vehicle combat into the mix with the All Terrain Kart. Should there be anyone out there of a more pacifistic persuasion, however, there's also an exciting non-violent addition to the game with the ability to play a fully functional round of golf with friends.

How to Get Started

To get started, everyone in one's squad will have to purchase Fortnite's Season 5 Battle Pass, and level it up to tier 27 by completing challenges. This unlocks the ability to play golf, which is one of the new "Toy" rewards in the Battle Pass. Toys function like emotes, but instead of just a dance they spawn physical items into the game that remain there indefinitely.

Where to Go on the Map

Having unlocked the golf toy, drop into the island and head over to Lazy Links, the spot on the map that replaced Anarchy Acres. The golf emote will work anywhere, but the holes in the course at Lazy Links actually create a sound effect and spit out confetti when a golf ball goes in, making it possible to play some proper games and keep track of scores.

Designate a Scorekeeper

Once there, players can make their way around the course and play golf as normal, traveling between holes using Fortnite's new Golf Cart for added authenticity. When balls go in, the distance is actually listed in the killfeed like a sniper kill, but the game won't keep track of anyone's score. It's probably a good idea for one member of the squad to keep a notepad near by to note down scores and the order of play.

Beware of Trigger-Happy Enemies

The difficulty is, of course, that if a squad should attempt to stage their civilized game of golf during a regular match, chances are that fellow players won't simply stand around and offer some light applause. Playground is ideal for golf, allowing players to have the whole island to themselves, but until it returns permanently, squads will have to win control of Lazy Links and then stay vigilant for any unwanted guests on the fairway.

Fortnite Season 5 Week 1 challenges

The addition of Toy items might seem like a small thing at first glance, but it's actually a big step for Fortnite. Adding a new dimension to the game like this helps to prevent the experience from  growing stale, while also expanding the ever-growing list of things Fortnite offers which other Battle Royale games don't.

Playing golf takes a little bit of work to set up. However, it's a surprisingly functional little mini-game that every Fortnite fan should try.
