Cars have finally arrived in Fortnite, bringing a fresh way to travel to Epic's genre-defining Battle Royale. The new patch, fittingly named the Joy Ride Update, adds four vehicles for players to fight over. These Fortnite cars can be driven by any player who finds one, and can even play music from their radios.

Unfortunately, Fortnite's latest vehicles don't run on Resources, so players will need to keep their ride topped up to function. Re-fuelling in a Battle Royale is a risky prospect, leaving a player vulnerable to attack while they wait for their gas-tank to fill. However, the speed and durability of the new vehicles make it a risk worth taking, and players who know how to fuel will be able to keep their vehicles throughout a match.

A Hasty Pit-Stop

The quickest and easiest way to fill up a car's tank is at a Gas Station. There are twelve of these Stations scattered evenly across the Battle Island, meaning players should never have to go far for a top-up. It's worth remembering however that these Stations are often near busy areas on the map, and will be a magnet for campers hoping to pick up an easy kill and a free ride.

To refuel at a Gas Station, players will need to pull up their new Fortnite car beside one of the gas pumps. Exit, and interact with the pump itself to pick up the nozzle. Then simply press the "Pump" button and face the vehicle and the meter should begin filling. Pressing interact while doing this will cause the character to hop back in the car, which can be useful if a quick getaway is needed.

Running on Fumes

The problem with having to escape a Gas Station mid-refuel is the risk of running out completely before reaching the next one. If this happens, and going on foot isn't an option, then players do have another choice. Alongside a whole trove of new skins for existing items, Throwable Gas Cans are now scattered across the island.

While not as effective as a proper pump, these Gas Cans can be used to refuel a car well enough to get it moving again. This will give the player a chance to reach a more suitable fuel source. Gas Cans can even be filled up at the pumps, allowing a player to not only refuel their car but also prepare a backup. For those attempting Fortnite's Season 3 Week 8 driving challenges, this extra fuel can make the difference between success and failure.

Fortnite is free-to-play on Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions in development.
