This past weekend, Epic Games held the Fortnite World Cup, an event that drew large crowds of fans to New York City in order to watch pros compete for the top spot. The winner, a 16-year-old pro named Bugha, took home the trophy and $3 million in prize money. This apparently caught the attention of Fox News correspondent Dana Perino, who recently invited esports consultant Rod Breslau onto her show to discuss the event and ask some questions about the nature of esports.

This conversation mostly comes across as an uninitiated host trying to learn details about Fortnite, but there are some hilarious bits that come from the helpful blurbs that appear on screen throughout. One blurb that is particularly funny shares a "cheat" with viewers, reading: "Way to cheat: hide in the bushes until the end of the game and you can sometimes win without doing anything." Even the most casual Fortnite player is likely to admit to having tried out this “cheat” at some point in their lives.

Presumably, the goal of sharing this "cheat" is to give parents of Fortnite players something to share with their kids when conversing about the game. However, for a Fortnite fan, having this tip described as a “cheat” might induce a hearty guffaw.

Beyond the "cheat," this conversation also serves as an introduction to the game for an audience of parents who do not know much about Fortnite. Breslau gives a run-down of the basics of the game and of esports in general before moving on to cover ways that parents can support children who have an interest in becoming pros.

As a gamer, it’s easy to get a chuckle out of this kind of interview, but this one feels surprisingly genuine. Perino may be a bit out of her element, but she seems genuinely interested in understanding Fortnite and helping parents understand it too. The clip doesn’t take any cheap shots at the esports community, and by the end, the message is more of an encouraging one, empowering parents to find ways to connect with kids who have an interest in esports.

Fortnite is out now for Android, iOS, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
