Fortnite update 13.20 is live now, and it adds a variety of new Punch Cards, achievements, and styles to Epic Games' battle royale sensation. The update also introduces a new weapon called the Flare Gun, which has been teased several times since the beginning of Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 3, and players can find details on what this weapon does and where to locate it below.

To start, Flare Guns in Fortnite can be obtained from chests, supply drops, and llamas, though it is important to note that this weapon is somewhat rare. More specifically, the drop chance for Flare Guns is 9.2% from supply drops, rare chests, and llamas, while it is only 4.03% from standard chests. This means that players should certainly not expect to pickup a Flare Gun in every match, and indeed even finding one may require some patience.

Once a player has earned one of Fortnite's Flare Guns, there are then several things that they can do with it. The first and perhaps least desirable option is to fire it a target to deal 60 damage. This can be done a total of six times before the weapon is spent, as that is the number of shots that a Flare Gun comes loaded with, but it is worth mentioning that the gun's 1.5 second reload time prevents it from being fired in quick succession.

Alternatively, players can use the Flare Gun in Fortnite to burn cover, as its shots will set fire to the features adjacent to where they land. This aspect of the weapon is sure to remind many fans of Fortnite's Firefly Jar, which was also recently added to the game, and it does give the Flare Gun some added appeal.

Finally, this new Fortnite weapon can also be used to locate an opponent by firing shots into their vicinity. Indeed, any foe that is near a flare when it detonates will be marked for the player that fired the Flare Gun. While it remains to be seen exactly how useful this ability is, it is interesting at the very least and means that fans should not judge Fortnite's Flare Gun by its damage alone.

Fortnite is available on Android, iOS, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
