Gaming rumors often turn out to be true in the end, but perhaps just as many - if not more - are ultimately proven to be false. One such rumor has apparently been squashed by a Fortnite dev, who claims that the PS5 Erebus code name isn't actually referring to the PlayStation 5 at all.

The rumor mill came alive yesterday after code was found hidden deep in the Unreal Engine 4 which, after a full list of existing consoles, referred to a final one dubbed only as 'Erebus'. With the strong ties between Epic Games and Sony, and another Greek mythos name used for 'Project Morpheus' that ultimately became the PS4's VR headset, it stood to reason that this could have been the project name for the upcoming PS5. However, Fortnite developer Arjan Brussee spoke up on Twitter, stating that the code name actually referred to the Switch build of Fortnite before it was ready to be revealed.

Some gamers are still debating whether or not Brussee is simply trying to sweep a possible hint at the PS5 under the rug, but there's no real reason to lie. In addition, while the other consoles on the list are clearly marked with abbreviations based upon the name of the consoles or their online services, Erebus's abbreviation is 'TST2', which is likely to be simply short for Test 2.

As for why Erebus has a Greek name, only those responsible for the code in the Unreal Engine 4 could say for sure. However, since Erebus was a deity embodying darkness and shadow in Greek mythology, it may have simply been a clever way of obfuscating the existence of a Switch port by essentially keeping it hidden in the shadows, as Brussee stated. Fortnite for the Switch was, after all, dropped into the Nintendo eShop quite suddenly, being announced and released on the same day as Nintendo's presentation at E3 2018.

PlayStation fans may have quite a while to wait yet until any solid information regarding the PS5 comes to light. Supposedly, gamers shouldn't expect the PS5 to release before 2020, so any concrete information regarding the console likely won't be announced until Sony's good and ready, potentially during the next PlayStation Experience at the earliest.

Fortnite is out now for PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, iOS devices, and in beta for Android devices.
