Since it launched last year, Fortnite Battle Royale has been largely defined by the ability to build structures and letting players express themselves through customization. Character skins have been a massive part of this, though the feature has since expanded to include things like back blings, gliders, pick axes, and even contrails when players are falling onto the map. According to a recent leak, Epic Games plans to expand the customization element of Fortnite to include even more content.
As detailed from the Fortnite Battle Royale Leaks Twitter account, who is notable for datamining new information for the game, Epic Games appears to be adding a whole list of new categories that players will be able to modify on some level. While the traditional customization items are listed, the leak also features many new items now previously seen such as:
- The Battle Bus
- Calling Card
- Consumable Emote
- Hat
- Map Markers
- Vehicle Decorations
- Victory Poses
While details as to when and how these items are going to be added aren't yet known, the list features a lot of interesting options. Hats are likely going to function similarly to back blings in that they come with a skin, but can then be mixed and matched with other unlocked character skins. Unlike most of the other customization items, it's possible that vehicle and Battle Bus skins would be things that only the player could see. Naturally, there's only one Battle Bus and vehicles are a shared item so to have custom skins and decorations be added and removed everytime a player enters/exits one doesn't make much sense.
While cosmetics are undoubtedly a major aspect of Fortnite Battle Royale, helping to drive revenue in this free mode for Epic Games, it has also been a source of controversy as well. The Red Knight skin, an item that originally only went on sale once back in February, was the rarest and most sought after skin in the game. Last month, Epic decided to bring the skin back to the store for those who missed out originally, which didn't sit well with those who wanted the skin to remain rare.
Fortnite is out now on iOS, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One. An Android version is in development as well.
