Since its inception as a zombie survival/building co-op game, Fortnite has certainly come a long way. Two years ago it added the Fortnite Creative mode, allowing players to make their own creations.

Unlike the most prominent mode for Fortnite (Battle Royale), Creative allows for a lot of freedom. Players can build their own levels on different islands with different props. Many players have made frequent use of Creative mode, and for some it is the most played mode over Battle Royale. After a long absence of meaningful updates, Epic is finally giving something new to Creative mode: a rotation of popular maps.

Players who love Creative mode have been upset at a lack of meaningful updates, and it seems Epic has finally listened, at least somewhat. Fortnite update 14.60 will introduce a portals showcase displaying the most popular Creative islands. These will be grouped by genres like Combat, Practice Matches, and Variety Games. Presumably Variety Games is a grab bag for creations that don't easily fit Fortnite's shooter identity. There are a lot of these, so it's likely the Variety Games portal will be somewhat crowded if this is indeed how it groups islands.

Some of these Variety games include obstacle course entries that have grown popular alongside games that inspired them. Recreations of Fall Guys courses are some of the most popular of these. Fortunately, the Portals are not the only new way Creative islands will be shown off. An LTM will also be introduced that will regularly rotate popular maps, showing off new ones in updated playlists. Presumably each of these playlists will be centered around a theme, with each map having at least something to do with that theme. Whether these themes are around gameplay types like the Portals or centered around other games, genres, etc. is currently unknown.

There's certainly a lot of material to draw on when promoting maps. Several players have recreated popular Call of Duty maps in Creative, like Rust and Highrise. If there are enough recreations it's even possible that there could be entire playlists or portals based on recreations of other games.

On completely the other end of the spectrum, one player made an open world RPG in Creative. How exactly such an extensive and out-there creation would fit in with the others is uncertain, but it definitely deserves its time in the sun. While Fortnite Creative players will soon have a new avenue to display their creations, hopefully it does not incentivize creating one thing over another.

Fortnite is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
