Today, the video game developer Epic Games ensured that Update 4.2 went live for its sandbox survival title Fortnite, with the patch adding a new apple healing item, as well as the highly-coveted Epic and Legendary burst assault rifle. While plenty of fans are surely enjoying the additions of the latest update, it looks as if the patch's game files are hosting even more content to come, as a recent datamine has discovered the multiplayer release might be getting a Competitive Mode at some point in the near future.

As seen in the image below, a new "Comp" folder has been added to the Playlists section within Fortnite's game files, which also contains previously included Limited Time Modes such as High Explosives, Sneaky Snipers, Solid Gold, and more. While "Comp" doesn't necessarily indicate that Epic Games is planning a Competitive Mode – as it could be shorthand for other potential modes like "Compilation" or even "Compadres" – it seems improbable that it could mean anything else.

As suggested by the outlet known as Fortnite Intel, the lack of "Playlist_Comp_Duos" and "Playlist_Comp_Squads" files underneath the package name portion of the above window could mean that if Epic Games is intending to put out a Competitive Mode for Fortnite, it might only be available for Solo play. However, there's also the possibility that Solo would only be available as a means to test out the mode before Duos and Squads comes out at a later point in time. Of course, with the developer having yet to confirm as much, we will have to wait and see if it gets implemented.

All things considered, should Epic Games be planning to introduce a Competitive Mode for Fortnite, it would be interesting to see how it would affect the meta of the game, as well as the viewership of streaming sites like Twitch, for there would surely be plenty of folks tuning in to watch the cream of the crop duke it out. After all, channels featuring online personalities taking on the title's free-to-play Battle Royale portion are already among some of the most-watched streams on the site. Surely, the added edge of ranked competition would drive Fortnite's popularity up even further.

Fortnite is available now in early access for iOS, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
