Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 4 officially begins and Epic Games' trailer for the new season has introduced a new chrome threat. Fortnite players have weathered the surprisingly long Season 3, which featured the growth of the Reality Tree and its spread across the map. Now the Reality Tree is dead and chrome is spreading from the opposite side of Fortnite's map. Something strange is going on in Season 4 of Fortnite, but that's to be expected.

The new trailer for Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 4 doesn't provide many answers regarding what's happened between Season 3 and Season 4. It begins with Fortnite characters Origin, Scientist, Visitor, and a newly maskless Paradigm modeled after Brie Larson investigating a mysterious chrome substance. This chrome has already spread across a generous portion of the map, despite not appearing in Season 3 whatsoever. The chrome then devours Origin, Scientist, and Visitor, leaving Paradigm to fly off in search of a solution.

That's the state of Fortnite as Chapter 3 Season 4, dubbed Paradise by Epic Games, begins. The Reality Tree is dead, a mysterious chrome liquid has taken over part of the map, a strange villain named The Herald has appeared after disappearing for the entirety of Season 3, and what happens next is anyone's guess. All that's clear is that the chrome is spreading.

Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 4 also has a variety of new playable content to be found in-game. There are multiple chrome-themed weapons, a chrome consumable that transforms players into a blob when they sprint, and chrome chests to open. These chests will be locked in special areas that require chrome keys to open. Some general gameplay changes have also been made, like how sliding into an enemy will now knock them back, and riding a boar or wolf will allow players to pet them.

It's exciting for Fortnite to have a new round of content available for players to dig into, but some gamers are wary of what they see as a very odd transition between seasons. In many ways, Season 3 may as well have not even existed, and Season 4 is starting in a surprisingly similar fashion -- just with chrome instead of the Reality Tree.

At the very least, Chapter 3 Season 4 of Fortnite will move much faster than Season 3. The leaked end date for Season 4 is very early in December, which would make it less than three months long. Chrome will spread in the meantime, Spider-Gwen will get involved, and what happens next is anyone's guess.

Fortnite is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and mobile devices.
