This weekend past saw the biggest shakeup in Fortnite since Epic Games decided to give its modestly-received zombie-defense game a battle royale mode. The old map is gone, replaced with a new one full of boats, haystacks one can hide in Assassin’s Creed-style, and plenty more new things to push Fortnite into a new era. Things are changing, but not so fast that players can no longer take on a familiar mission set or two.
For the time being at least, Fortnite Chapter 2 is sticking with Chapter 1’s formula of giving players a weekly set of challenges to take on while they play normally. But in keeping with the general newness of Chapter 2, the “New World” challenges will challenge players to acquaint themselves with the new map and new gameplay mechanics in order to earn some sweet rewards.
New World Mission Challenges
Here is the full list of the New World mission’s challenges:
-Discover 10 different named locations
-Get 3 eliminations at Lazy Lake or Misty Meadows
-Discover 10 different landmarks
-Ride a Motorboat in 3 different matches
-Deal 500 damage to opponents using assault rifles
-Search 7 chests at Sweaty Sands or Retail Row
-Get eliminations in 5 different matches
-Catch 1 weapon using a fishing rod
-Damage opponents with SMGs, shotguns, and pistols in the same match
-Carry a knocked teammate 10 meters
-Find the “F” hidden in the New World loading screen.
Veteran players will no doubt notice some new terms there, some of which might be confusing without some explanation. Take the challenges regarding named locations and landmarks. The reason for the first one is that, when players drop into their first match in Chapter 2, their map is completely blacked out. Unless they’ve already looked at Fortnite’s new map ahead of time, the idea is for them to scour the map and uncover points of interest like Dirty Docks and Sweaty Sands as they go, which will make them visible on the map.
Landmarks are a different story, however. Though similar to POIs, these locations won’t be highlighted by name on the map. These include smaller interesting locations like a bridge, a lighthouse, or the island at the center of the map, for instance. Clearly, Epic wants players to see as much of the map as possible while they try to dodge the dozens of people trying to shoot them, and this gives them incentive to do so.
New World Mission Rewards
Amid the changes that Chapter 2 brings to the Fortnite formula is a streamlining of how rewards are given out for completing challenges. Before, most mission sets rewarded players with a mix of XP and Battle Stars. For the time being at least, Battle Stars are out of the picture, and instead each of the New World challenges will give players 14,000 XP upon completion.
After completing eight of the eleven challenges, players will also receive the New World mission’s exclusive loading screen. During Season 10, these loading screens provided clues as to where to find the secret Battle Stars hidden throughout the map each week. As the “Find the hidden ‘F’” challenge suggests, though, it looks like players will be hunting down the letters that spell out “Fortnite” over the next few weeks instead.
