Season 3 of Epic Games' battle royale Fortnite has been defined by its underwater theming, as the in-game map being flooded introduced mechanics like water skiing behind loot sharks, as well as a crossover with DC Comics' Aquaman. However, as the map has begun to drain, players are waiting on a promised update adding cars to drive around Fortnite's island. Now it seems that update is finally on its way.

The official Fortnite Twitter account posted an image of a blue-and-red car called "Whiplash" today, and with it told fans they can experience the Joy Ride Update starting August 5, 2020. Driving cars has been teased since the initial trailer for Season 3 was released, but on July 23 it was announced over social media that Fortnite's car update would be delayed for "a few weeks until we're road ready."

Despite the delay, players already have a good idea of what they may be able to expect coming into Fortnite this week. Data miners leaked mechanical and damage values for Fortnite vehicles using files from version 13.30, while also revealing there are a variety of automobiles to choose from including sedans, sports cars, pickup trucks, and semi-trucks.

Cars have been present all over Fortnite's map since Season 3: Splashdown began in mid-June, so fans of the game should be excited to finally get their hands on one. However, Fortnite removed police cars amid Black Lives Matter protests against police brutality all over the world following the highly-publicized deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and others, so they will likely not be included in the update.

More updates throughout Season 3's run have added lots of activities and new locales to explore for fans of the battle royale as water drains from its map. For instance, last week a new location called Coral Castle came to Fortnite in place of a huge whirlpool, validating weeks worth of leaks suggesting Atlantis would be added into the game.

As exciting as new content is for fans of Epic Games' blockbuster title, including the long-anticipated Joy Ride Update, Fortnite has also become famous for its in-game "live" events. Fortnite has hosted screenings for movies and trailers, as well as concerts with artists like Travis Scott. Recently, Epic Games announced Japanese musician Kenshi Yonezu will host the game's next Party Royale on August 7.

Fortnite is available now on mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One. PS5 and Xbox Series X versions are in development.
