Emotes in video games offer every player a way to express themselves, but with Fortnite's "Boogiedown" competition, one player would get the chance to put their personal stamp on the Battle Royale phenomenon forever. A few weeks and thousands of submissions later, Twitter user Populotus has won that esteemed honor.

The winning submission, along with four runners-up, were announced in a YouTube video uploaded to Fortnite's channel. The submissions range from males to females, young to old(er), and comically goofy to genuinely talented - an appropriate choice from Epic Games given the competition's likely purpose of furthering the team's famed engagement with all fans.

While only Populotus will see his dance actually make it into the game, the runners-up of the competition will receive more than just an honorary mention. The next four winners will all receive 10,000 V-Bucks each, along with a real life model of the in-game Boogie Bomb explosive, worth $150. The five winners after that will each get 10,000 V-Bucks, followed by incrementally decreasing V-Bucks prizes for the remaining 90 runners-up.

Following his win, Populotus took to Twitter to express his excitement and gratitude to everyone who shared his submission:

His excitement is understandable, given tens of millions of people will now see his moves in-game once the emote goes live. Fortnite dances are such a big deal, in fact, that even rapper Drake is keen to get his own emote added to the game, offering to include lyrics about the Battle Royale game in an upcoming song in return.

At first glance, the Boogiedown seems to be nothing more than a silly competition for hardcore fans - but it's arguably exactly this kind of quirky fan interaction that has Fortnite continuing to break records and make headlines. With this dance competition, the on-going Tilted Towers meteor rumor, and constant new content being added to the game, Epic Games are becoming masters of keeping their Battle Royale game firmly embedded in pop culture. Given this, it's only a matter of time before we see yet another viral campaign surrounding the game.

Fortnite Battle Royale is out now for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Mobile.
