Fortnite was already a unique experience when it first launched back in July of 2017. It put the classic battle-royale mode back in the spotlight of gaming, leading to many other games trying their hand at the formula since. One thing that has helped the game remain fresh for as long as it has, however, is the implementation of seasons.

Each season allows players to unlock special items in a Battle Pass, play different kinds of limited-time game modes, and bring new map changes that can really affect how games are played. There have been 28 of them so far, with each one having a huge impact on the game. Some of them have been a lot more memorable than others though.

Fans have had the opportunity to experience dozens of different season themes and hundreds of new game updates.

Players got to experience a full season in the Chapter 5 map since this article was last updated, so it is time to take into consideration Chapter 5 Season 1 and add it to this list, which includes all 28 Fortnite seasons to date.

28 Chapter 2 Season 8

Fortnite Cubed

• Period: September 13, 2021 - December 4, 2021
• Duration: 82 days
• Theme: Cube Corruption
• New Locations: Corny Crops and The Convergence

Chapter 2 Season 8 was the last season of the second Fortnite chapter. It had some interesting concepts, such as The Mothership; it introduced gamers to the iconic Fabio Sparklemane had Carnage as part of its Battle Pass, but despite this, it can be considered somewhat unmemorable when compared to some more exciting or nostalgic-riddled seasons.

27 Chapter 4 Season 3

Fortnite Wilds

• Period: June 9, 2023 - August 25, 2023
• Duration: 76 days
• Theme: Jungle
• New Locations: Rumble Ruins, Creeky Compound, Shady Stilts

Fortnite WILDS brought a lot of interesting concepts to the table, but it just wasn't as captivating as it could've been. It was released once the MEGA Season came to an end, so after such a chaotic and fun season, it fell short of some fans' expectations. However, it did introduce players to the jungle biome as well as mud, an interesting new gameplay mechanic, and it added lots of fun temples filled with loot ready to be explored.

26 Chapter 1 Season X

Out of Time

• Period: August 1, 2019 - October 13, 2019
• Duration: 74 days
• Theme: Time
• New Locations: Dusty Depot, Gotham City, Greasy Grove, Moisty Palms, Pandora, Retail Row, Starry Suburbs, The Cube, The Meteor, and Tilted Town

Though the black hole climax was undeniably epic and the return of some fan-favorite locations was a nice touch, Season X of Fortnite just didn't offer up nearly enough new content to keep the game feeling fresh. There were hardly any new cosmetics in the battle pass, with players instead having to make do with upgraded skins from Season 9. The changes made to gameplay weren't bad, per se, but the sheer volume of them was perhaps a little overwhelming to some players.

25 Chapter 2 Season 1

A New World

• Period: October 15, 2019 - February, 2020
• Duration: 128 days
• Theme: New Beginnings
• New Locations: Craggy Cliffs, Dirty Docks, Frenzy Farm, Holly Hedges, Lazy Lake, Misty Meadows, Steamy Stacks, Slurpy Swamp, Sweaty Sands, and Weeping Woods

After a couple of days of downtime, Fortnite returned with a brand new map and the longest season to date. Sadly, like Season X, the first season of Chapter 2 was a little underwhelming, with very few updates coming throughout the season. The addition of boats and fishing was kind of cool, as was the harpoon, but many fans were expecting a little more after the epic conclusion of Chapter 1.

24 Chapter 2 Season 6

Primal

• Period: March 16, 2021 - June 8, 2021
• Duration: 84 days
• Theme: Wildlife
• New Locations: Bat Shack, Boney Burbs, Colossal Crops, Guardian of the Bay, Guardian of the Fields, Guardian of the Lake, Guardian of the Mountains, Guardian of the Sea, Guardian of the Woods, Isla Nublada, Primal Pond, and The Spire

A lot of care and attention seems to have gone into curating the new skins for Chapter 2: Season 6, but perhaps not quite enough thought was given to the gameplay tweaks. Things did improve a little towards the end of the season and the Zero Crisis storyline had a satisfying conclusion. For a game that's built much of its success around its combat though, many players were expecting quite a bit more, particularly from the weapons.

23 Chapter 3 Season 4

Paradise

• Period: September 18, 2022 - December 3, 2022

• Theme: Chrome
• New Locations: Cloudy Condos, Flutter Barn, Chromejam Junction, Chrome Crossroads, Grim Gables, Fort Jonesy, Reality Tree, Herald's Sanctum, Lustrous Lagoon, Shimmering Shrine, Shiny Sound

During Chapter 3 Season 4, a strange substance called Chrome took over the peaceful Paradise Island. Gamers could cover themselves in Chrome to move around faster, use fast-paced Chrome weapons, and take down the Herald in an intimidating Chrome fortress.

The lore wasn't as deep during this season, but the gameplay was quite a lot of fun, especially during the Fortnitemares event, as DJ Lyka put on a great show at the Reality Tree and players could turn into wolves.

22 Chapter 4 Season 4

Last Resort

• Period: August 25, 2023 - November 3, 2023
• Duration: 70 days
• Theme: Heist
• New Locations: Eclipsed Estate, Relentless Retreat Sanguine Suites, The Getaway

Chapter 4 Season 4 was the last season of the fourth chapter, so it was the last time that players got to enjoy Asteria Island before it was replaced. Even though the heist theme was quite interesting, it fell short for many gamers, especially compared to Chapter 2 Season 2, which was arguably a more entertaining version of it with now classic Fortnite skins.

On top of this, the skins included in the Last Resort Battle Pass were not memorable at all; it is unlikely that gamers in the future will recall any of its skins besides Ahsoka and Fish Thicc.

21 Chapter 5 Season 1

Fortnite Underground

• Period: December 3, 2023 - March 8, 2024
• Duration: 96 days
• Theme: The Society
• New Locations: Rebel's Roost, Classy Courts, Lavish Lair, Ritzy Riviera, Reckless Railways, Grand Glacier, Ruined reels, Hazy Hillside, Fencing Fields, Pleasant Piazza, Snooty Steppes

Even though many players consider Fortnite OG, the season before Chapter 5 Season 1, to be peak Fortnite, as it replicated many aspects of the first Chapter 1, some were happy to see the return of more mechanics and more complex locations.

Chapter 5 brought quality of life changes, such as the ability to drink shields and apply medkits while walking, and it added brand-new features that were immediately a success, like the Society Medallions, which continued with the Aspect of the Gods medallions in the Myths & Mortals season. What set this season back for many players is the fact that it redid an already overused theme, and that's spies and heists.

20 Chapter 2 Season 2

Top Secret

• Period: February 20, 2020 - June 17, 2020
• Duration: 118 days
• Theme: Secret Agents
• New Locations: The Agency, The Grotto, The Rig, The Shark, and The Yacht

Sometimes referred to as Season 12, Chapter 2: Season 2 brought big changes with it when it went live in early 2020. A spy-themed Battle Pass introduced players to some great new points of interest that instantly became fan favorites due to the awesome loot they had. Having Deadpool as a secret skin was also fantastic and just adds to the list of incredible crossovers Fortnite has had with other big-name franchises.

19 Chapter 1 Season 9

The Future Is Yours

• Period: May 9, 2019 - July 31, 2019
• Duration: 84 days
• Theme: Futuristic
• New Locations: Mega Mall, Neo Tilted, and Pressure Plant

Season 9 of Fortnite definitely had its ups and downs, yet Epic Games should be praised for the ambitious changes they added throughout the season. Neo-Tilted was the new hot-drop spot full of futuristic skyscrapers and whirlwinds of air that could move players quickly across the city. Replacing the pump shotgun with the combat shotgun was a controversial decision at the time, but players eventually realized that the combat shotgun is actually a very effective weapon.

18 Chapter 2 Season 3

Splashdown

• Period: June 17, 2020 - August 6, 2020
• Duration: 70 days
• Theme: Aquatics
• New Locations: Catty Corner, Coral Castle, Rickety Rig, The Authority, and The Fortilla

After a slow start to Chapter 2, its third season made quite the splash with players when it finally arrived in June 2020. The Aquaman Challenges were a lot of fun and there was a strong selection of cosmetic rewards included in the battle pass. The decision to replace the pump-action shotgun with the charge shotgun was a little controversial, but the season was otherwise warmly received by the player base.

17 Chapter 3 Season 2

Resistance

• Period: March 20, 22 - June 4, 2022
• Duration: 76 days
• Theme: Imagined Order vs. The Seven
• New Locations: The Fortress, Command Cavern, Synapse Station, Daily Rubble and The Collider

Chapter 3 Season 2 was all about the war between the IO and The Seven. It was very lore-heavy and it brought a lot of destruction to the Battle Royale island. For those who enjoy Fortnite's background story, it definitely one of the most interesting seasons. And the same goes for those who enjoy Fortnite collab skins, as it included both Doctor Strange and The Prowler.

16 Chapter 3 Season 1

Flipped

• Period: December 5, 2021 - March 19, 2022
• Duration: 104 days
• Theme: Island flip
• New Locations: Condo Canyon, Chonker's Speedway, Covert Cavern, Sleepy Sound, Camp Cuddle, Rocky Reels, Logjam Luberyard, The Joneses, Sanctuary, Coney Crossroad, The Daily Bugle

Following the Chapter 2 Season 8 live event, the Fortnite island was flipped over, and it made way for the Flipped season - the first of Chapter 3. This was a fun, hectic season, and players got to play a new map after Chapter 2's two-year duration. On top of this, it included some of the most memorable Battle Pass skins, such as Spider-Man and The Foundation.

15 Chapter 1 Season 6

Darkness Rises

• Period: September 27, 2018 - December 5, 2018
• Duration: 70 days
• Theme: Darkness
• New Locations: Corn Fields, Corrupted Areas, Floating Island, and Haunted Castle

Things got a little bit spookier in Fortnite with the release of Season 6. This season fell around Halloween as well, so developers made the map feel much darker than players had become accustomed to, which came as a welcome surprise to many. This season added zombies to the battle royale, which at first felt like a fun addition, although some felt that the zombies were completely ruining end-game situations.

14 Chapter 2 Season 7

Invasion

• Period: June 8, 2021 - September 12, 2021
• Duration: 96 days
• Theme: Aliens
• New Locations: Believer Beach, Cargo Craft, Corny Complex, Dampy Dish, Deep Woods Dish, Defiant Dish, Destined Dish, Dinky Dish, Discovery Dish, Dockside Dish, Food Fighter, Steamy Spaceship, and The Aftermath

The alien invasion theme that punctuates the seventeenth season of Fortnite is incredibly well-written and is clearly building to another Epic event. The gameplay changes weren't too obtrusive and the alien-themed cosmetics all looked great too. The Rick Sanchez skin also seemed pretty fitting given the theme.

13 Chapter 3 Season 3

Vibin'

• Period: June 5, 2022 - September 17
• Duration: 104 days
• Theme: Summer Fun
• New Locations: Reality Falls, Rave Cave, Lazy Lagoon, Neo Butter Barn, Sleepy Shrubs, and Shuffled Shrines

After the chaos that Chapter 3 Season 2 brought, the inhabitants of the Battle Royale island decided to sit back, relax, and plant some Reality Saplings; Chapter 3 Season 3 is all about vibing and chilling. Just like Chapter 1 Season 5, it's a summer season with tons of fun water landmarks; during this time, Fortnite event hosted the No Sweat Summer event.

12 Chapter 1 Season 7

You Better Watch Out

• Period: December 6, 2018 - February 27, 2019
• Duration: 84 days
• Theme: Winter
• New Locations: Frosty Flights, Happy Hamlet, Polar Peak, and The Block

The winter-themed Season 7 of Fortnite did a lot of great things to help move the game forward during a time in which some believed the game was getting stale. The addition of planes completely changed the way players got around the map, making matches feel a bit faster with traversal being so quick and easy. The winter-themed areas were another first for the game and the battle-pass included some great skins, including the upgradable Lynx, which became a fan-favorite.

11 Chapter 1 Season 5

Worlds Collide

• Period: July 12, 2018 - September 26, 2018
• Duration: 77 days
• Theme: Spacetime Rifts
• New Locations: Lazy Links, Paradise Palms, Tomato Temple, and Viking Village

Even though a lot of gamers were initially disappointed with the battle-pass skins, the map updates and new weapon introductions made Season 5 a blast to play. The theme of the battle-pass was rifts in time and space, which allowed Epic Games to create areas such as Viking Mountain. Weapons and items such as the Rift-to-Go, Heavy Sniper, Double Barrel Shotgun, and so many more made this a season that all players could enjoy.

10 Chapter 1 Season 1

Original Fortnite

• Theme: Battle Royale
• New Locations: Anarchy Acres, Dusty Depot, Fatal Fields, Flush Factory, Greasy Grove, Lonely Lodge, Loot Lake, Moisty Mire, Pleasant Park, Retail Row, Tomato Town, and Wailing Woods

While most of Fortnite's player base never experienced the earliest days of the game, Season 1 laid the groundwork for what would become one of the biggest games of all time. Gameplay felt a lot different because everyone was new to the game, so building wasn't utilized nearly as much as it is now. Fortnite has done an impeccable job of making building easier since Season 1, with updates allowing builds to go through trees and adding the builder-pro option for controller players.

9 Chapter 1 Season 8

X Marks the Spot

• Period: February 28, 2019 - May 8, 2019
• Duration: 70 days
• Theme: Pirate Adventure
• New Locations: Lazy Lagoon, Sunny Steps, and Volcano

While Season 7 took players to a wintery wonderland, Season 8 instead had players battling it out in a pirate's paradise full of palm trees. The battle-pass included some solid skin additions to the game such as the Peely skin, which has become a classic skin still worn by many Fortnite players to this day. A new limited-time "the floor is lava" mode was added in this season as well, which really was one of the best-limited modes Fortnite has ever released.
