Fortnite is revealing new details about its latest in-game event. Aptly titled Short Nite Film Festival, the event will see the screening of several animated film shorts from around the world.

Epic Games' popular free-to-play battle royale title is well into the fifth season of Chapter 2. The crossover-focused season continues to bring in characters from across various franchises, including the likes of Halo's Master Chief, G.I. Joe's Snake Eyes, and The Walking Dead's Daryl Dixon. Recently, a new leak hinted at WandaVision skins, potentially adding the MCU's most powerful couple into the mix, on top of the film festival.

The official Fortnite Twitter handle announced the details of the Short Nite Film Festival earlier today. Set to take place this coming weekend, the limited-time event will run from February 20 at 2 pm EST for exactly 24 hours, ending on February 21, 2 pm EST. The festival will bring acclaimed animated film shorts to the Big Screen, featuring artists from a variety of countries. The total runtime of the festival is about 30 minutes and will be on repeat until the festival is over. The screening of the animated shorts will take place in Fortnite's Party Royale mode, but is also available via picture-in-picture within the normal Battle Royale mode every two hours for the duration of the event.

In celebration of Short Nite, Fortnite players will be able to get their hands on the all-new Jumbo Popcorn Emote. The animation sees the player's avatar plop onto a fold-out chair with a comically huge bucket of popcorn, munching away while looking up intently.

The new Emote will become available through the Item Shop the day before the festival begins, which unfortunately means it won't be like last year's screening tath awarded Fortnite players with a free emote. For the animated shorts that feature dialogue, players will be able to watch using subtitles of their preferred language. It should also be noted that any streams or VODs featuring the films will go dark per content protection rules.

This is far from the first time Epic has used Fortnite as a film screening venue. In addition to playing productions such as director Christopher Nolan's film Tenet, the popular shooter also held a screening of We the People for Independence Day. Beyond showing film, the Party Royale island has been home to a number of musical performances, including acts such as Marshmello, Travis Scott, and more. Given Fortnite's sustained and immense popularity, it should be very interesting to see what other purposes the free-to-play game can fulfill.

The Short Nite Film Festival continues to demarcate Fortnite as a unique platform within the online gaming space. Especially during the ongoing pandemic, the ability to virtually gather for something like a film festival is creatively impressive. Still, though, there are plenty of fans who would just rather play the actual game itself. If Fortnite's Version 15.40 update is any indication, the active player base is about to go way, way up.

Fortnite is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
