As expected every Thursday, Fortnite is rolling out its latest set of Epic Quests, giving players a variety of tasks on the island. While the majority of the latest batch of quests focus on the Storm, this one requires players to activate a Rift by purchasing it from an NPC.

Epic Games' ever-popular free-to-play title is now in the final weeks of its sixth season. The current season has seen several major changes to Fortnite's meta, including the advent of "Primal" weapons, a weapon crafting system, vehicle modification items, animals, and more. The new content hasn't been limited to gameplay mechanics either, with the game recently releasing a song titled "Drop In" featuring famous rapper Trippie Redd.

How to Activate a Rift by Purchasing from a Character in Fortnite

Fortnite's Week 9 quest of activating a Rift by purchasing from a character is a self-explanatory task, although knowing where to look is crucial to completing it. For those who may be unaware, Rifts transport players high above the point where they enter one, allowing for glider redeploy to cover great distances. While players may have run across an NPC or two who offer Rift activation services, there are actually six of them in total. However, one of those six is Bunker Jonesy, who spawns randomly in one of ten different locations, making him the least reliable solution unless he's serendipitously found. Players can visit any of these five NPCs to activate a Rift.

  • Cabbie: outside of the building with the pool in Lazy Lake.
  • Willow: walking around the green area of Weeping Woods.
  • Rebirth Raven: cliffside house northwest of Sweaty Sands. Also possesses the Exotic Unstable Bow.
  • Raz: in the largest building within Colossal Crops.
  • Castaway Jonesy: on the tiny island north of Steamy Stacks.

Talk to any of the listed NPCs to complete the quest. It should be noted that activating a rift costs 245 Gold Bars, so players will want to make sure they have enough of the in-game currency. Thankfully this quest is a breeze compared to others this week like spending 7 seconds within 7 meters of a fleeing chicken, which requires much more patience. Once players know the location of one of the NPCs, it's as simple as tapping a few buttons or keys.

Rifts have had a tumultuous history in Fortnite's Battle Royale mode. Epic has wildly altered the transport method's availability over the years, from having them rampantly scattered throughout the island, to at one point having a portable Rift-to-go item, to now effectively holding them behind an NPC paywall. It's a shame the developers haven't unvaulted the Junk Rift this season, seeing as how the "Primal" theme would mesh well with the triceratops-dropping item. However, there are still a few weeks left before Season 6 ends, so technically anything could happen between now and then.

Fortnite is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
