Fortnite dominated gaming in 2018, so much so that it crossed over into the mainstream and according to a new report, it brought in a ton of profit for its developer, Epic Games. While Epic Games has not confirmed the number, it is being reported that the Fortnite developer brought in $3 billion dollars in 2018.

The profit figure comes from TechCrunch who reports that the numbers come from a source with knowledge of Epic Games' business; however, Epic Games itself has never released revenue figures for Fortnite or for the company as a whole in 2018. But based on this source and projections from some hard numbers that have been accurately disclosed throughout the year, such as the mobile version of Fortnite making $2 million per day alone, analysts are getting a clearer picture of just how much profit Epic Games made this year.

It's no surprise that Fortnite has been a huge moneymaker in 2018. Despite being free-to-play on nearly every platform imaginable, there are enough microtransactions tied to each season to incentivize the massive player to bring in an enormous amount of money. In March alone, for example, Fortnite generated $223 million in revenue.

Because Epic Games is a private company and keeps its exact financial information guarded, there could be some inaccuracy to that $3 billion dollars, but it's likely that estimates have been more conservative according to TechCrunch. Also good to keep in mind is that the $3 billion dollar figure is profit, not revenue, which means that is the total amount of money that Epic has earned after factoring in expenditures, costs, etc.

Epic Games is in a great spot at the end of this year with the entire company valued at $8 billion, and it doesn't look like the Fortnite train is slowing down anytime soon.

Fortnite is available now in early access for Android, iOS, PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One.
