As 2018 is about to wrap up, the popular shooter game Fortnite is still reigning strong as ever. Last March, Epic Games reported that the title in over $223 million in revenue, which quickly increased to almost $300 million in April. Now, reports reveal that the game was able to get 200 million registered players in less than a year after it was released on smartphones, making the game available on all gaming platforms.

Fortnite saw a 60 percent increase from the 125 million registered players Epic reported last June. This means that Fortnite was able to attract approximately 75 million more players in only five months, which is an impressive feat for any standards, especially since the game was just released last year.

As of the moment, the official breakdown of players per platform hasn't been provided. However, it is safe to assume that Fortnite’s release on other major platforms such as the Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android devices influenced the massive increase in players.

Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime previously reported that Fortnite has been downloaded 2 million times on the hybrid console during its first day. The same success was seen on the game’s mobile version especially after reports surfaced that Epic Games earned a staggering $300 million within the first 200 days of Fortnite’s launch in the iOS store.

Of course, just as with anything that has gained this much attention, Fortnite has also been bombarded with negative criticisms. A few months ago, a UK divorce website claimed that over 200 couples cited Fortnite addiction as one of the reasons for the dissolution of their marriages. While the report did not explain in detail how Fortnite played a role in these divorces, it seems to suggest that addiction to the game is the primary reason.

There are so many factors that come into play when assessing why Fortnite is so popular. However, its availability on all gaming platforms is probably one of the biggest contributors to its success. Also, the fact that Epic Games is tirelessly adding updates to mix up the gameplay, such as crossovers from the likes of Marvel's Thanos, is probably another reason why players are so addicted to this game.

As Fortnite soars into success after success, it will be interesting to see what Epic Games has in store for the future of the game. While it is still too early to think of a sequel, maybe it’s time for Epic to finally introduce a new mode that has the potential to rival Battle Royale.

Fortnite is out now in early access for Android, iOS, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
